Nové Město na Moravě brings together local history, collections and a range of sports facilities. The town lies on the southern edge of the Žďárské vrchy. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on culture and history or on exercise and swimming. The places and activities below offer some specific options to help you decide.

Church, museum and local history

The Church of St. Kunigunde is the oldest monument to the town’s history and, as a distinctive building, shapes the town square. Its architecture combines Gothic and Baroque elements, alongside sgraffito decoration by local artist Karel Němec. The building thus brings together different stylistic elements and a distinct local artistic touch.

The Horácké Museum is housed in the old Renaissance town hall, built in the 16th century. Its themes range from folk culture and glassmaking to ironworking and skiing in the northern part of Moravian Horácko. The collection of unusual ski equipment and clothing is a particular highlight: it documents the development of skis and bindings, the production of the Sport company, and prizes and medals. Anyone interested in the history of skiing will find both equipment and information about its development and manufacture here.

Gallery and remembrance

The Horácká Gallery is housed in a former Renaissance chateau on Vratislavovo náměstí. An exhibition about Vincenc Makovský pays tribute to the sculptor in his hometown and home region. Another exhibition focuses on Jan Štursa and offers an overview of his work, from his student years and representative works to pieces in which he processed his wartime experiences. The two themes offer different perspectives, from Makovský’s connection to his home region to the various stages of Štursa’s artistic career.

House No. 13 commemorates the victims of the Holocaust through the story of the Jewish Brada family. This memorial adds the remembrance of people and families whose histories are linked to the town to its architectural and artistic themes.

Sports and exercise

The 4 km Příměstský okruh is close to Nové Město na Moravě and is groomed for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. Grooming depends on the weather. If you are interested in this route, bear in mind when planning that grooming is weather-dependent.

The Vysočina Arena offers roller-ski loops with a total length of 8.5 km, as well as marked running trails between 2 and 13 km long. A total length is given for the roller-ski loops, while the running trails are listed as routes of varying lengths. This gives you different measurements for two distinct activities to consider when planning your sporting focus.

Městské lázně has a 25 m swimming pool with four lanes. If swimming is part of your stay, check the current access conditions before visiting, as service and access rules may change.

Plan your excursions and arrival

The Tourist Information Centre offers guided walking tours of the town centre throughout the year. They provide information about the town’s history and notable people. This is one way to learn about local history on a guided tour; when planning, you can take the available tours and their themes into account.
