Mackovice combines a long history of settlement with striking Baroque architecture, historic traces of wine growing and a cycling route that passes through the village. The traditional krojované hody festival takes place in July. The Břežanka a Břežanský rybník Natura 2000 site includes alluvial wetlands in the valley of the Břežanka stream; the 25-kilometre Mezi poli a vinohrady cycling route also passes through Mackovice.

Church and Historic Traces

The Church of the Betrothal of the Virgin Mary (Zasnoubení Panny Marie) stands on a hill above Mackovice’s village square. This striking landmark is a Baroque church, expanded from a chapel built in 1712. If you are interested in the village’s cultural history, the church offers a clear point of reference.

Other cultural landmarks that can be dated include the Poklona Chapel, which dates from the 1860s, and the Boží Muka wayside shrine in Mackovice, from the mid-19th century. Together with the Baroque church, they offer a broader view of the different buildings and works of art in the village’s history.

The area’s early settlement also dates back a long way: Mackovice had a settlement as early as the La Tène period. It is one of the oldest settlements in the Znojmo District. Another historical connection is a Roman coin dating from 75 AD, found in a field between Mackovice and Načeraticemi. The settlement dates back to the La Tène period; the Roman coin dates from 75 AD.

Wine-Growing History and Cultural Event

The upper wine-growing rights granted to Mackovice in 1390 show that grapevines were already being cultivated there at that time. Wine growing therefore has a tangible place in the village’s history. The traditional krojované hody, a festival associated with traditional dress, is considered Mackovice’s most important cultural event and takes place in July. The date varies from year to year. If you would like to combine your trip with this event, check the date for the relevant year and factor it into your plans.

Nature and Cycling

The Břežanka a Břežanský rybník Natura 2000 site is a notable natural area. It includes alluvial wetlands in the valley of the Břežanka stream and protects the Desmoulin’s whorl snail (Vertigo moulinsiana).

If you would like to combine a visit to Mackovice with a cycling trip, the marked Mezi poli a vinohrady route passes through the village. It is 25 kilometres long and runs mainly along quiet roads and farm tracks. This gives you the route’s length and the types of paths it uses to help you plan. Before setting off, check the signs and route locally, as route details can change with local signage or road conditions.
