Lesní Hluboké: Castle, Chapel and Hiking Route
Accommodation in Lesní Hluboké
There are two clear themes to explore when planning a trip to Lesní Hluboké: architectural history and hiking. Lesní Hluboké Castle, the Chapel of St. Anne and an enclosed garden form a rural aristocratic estate used for recreation. The Údolím Bílého potoka hiking route also starts in the village. If you are looking for hotels in Lesní Hluboké, you can decide whether to focus your stay more on the cultural and historical sites or on hiking.
Castle and Chapel: Architectural History and Architecture
Lesní Hluboké Castle was built in 1770 as a hunting lodge and is a late Baroque residence of Rajhrad Monastery. The Chapel of St. Anne is a protected monument dating from 1776, six years after the castle was built. Its circular floor plan comprises a cylindrical nave, a set-back presbytery and an entrance porch. The presbytery is the altar area, set apart from the nave; the porch forms the entrance area in front. The floor plan and structural features therefore describe not only the chapel’s overall round shape, but also its layout. The castle and chapel can also be distinguished by their histories: the castle is defined by its late Baroque classification and original use as a hunting lodge, while the chapel is distinguished by its protected status and specific spatial form.
The Lime Tree Trunk at the Castle Gate
A trunk of an old lime tree stands by the castle’s entrance gate. It is estimated to be 300 to 400 years old. This range is an estimate, making it a different kind of date from the specific construction years of the castle and chapel. Together, the buildings and the tree remnant offer two different points of reference for understanding the history of the place: dated architecture on the one hand and an approximate age estimate on the other.
The Devět Křížů Memorial
The Devět Křížů Memorial consists of nine wooden crosses and commemorates the tragic massacre of wedding guests in 1540. Unlike the history of the castle and chapel, this memorial focuses on remembering a historical event, not on the architectural form or construction date of a building. This adds a different cultural and historical perspective to the story of the area’s architecture.
Údolím Bílého potoka Hiking Route
The Údolím Bílého potoka hiking route starts in Lesní Hluboké. The yellow trail markers lead via Radoškov to Pavlovcovův mlýn; from there, the route continues on the blue-marked trail to Šmelcovna. Trail conditions and stream crossings may change, so check the route and crossings before setting out.
