Kyjovice can be considered from two specific perspectives when planning a trip: the Sutny archaeological site is located within the municipality’s cadastral area, and the Znojemsko route of the Mlynářská Trail runs through the village. Archaeology and cycling offer different focuses. So when looking for a hotel in Kyjovice, you can first consider which of these will shape your trip.

Kyjovice and a long look back

The first written mention of Kyjovice dates from 1275. Sutny takes this timeline much further back: the archaeological site lies within Kyjovice’s cadastral area, on a gentle rise north of a reservoir, and was continuously inhabited from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. This brings two distinct historical points of reference together: the first written mention and a settlement spanning several periods. If you want to understand Kyjovice through its long history of settlement, Sutny offers a specific archaeological focus.

The Sutny rondel is associated with the Moravian Painted Ware culture. Its structure comprises a ditch and several palisade trenches both inside and outside the ditch. This description adds a specific form to the long chronology: the archaeological focus encompasses both the period of settlement and the construction of the rondel. Sutny is considered a major archaeological site in category UAN I. Systematic archaeological research has been conducted there since 1964; this date belongs to the history of research, not to the creation of the prehistoric structure.

Těšetice-Kyjovice also has an archaeological location: the site lies on the edge of Tvořihrážský Forest. The excavated areas of Těšetice-Kyjovice “Sutny,” together with the Těšetice “Vinohrady” site, form the largest known Hallstatt-period settlement complex. This classification applies to both areas together, not solely to the architectural description of the rondel. This makes it possible to distinguish the significance of the settlement complex from the structure of an individual archaeological site.

Protected areas and their focuses

Jevišovka is a Natura 2000 protected area of European importance, with the code CZ0623041. It protects aquatic habitats with aquatic plant vegetation. The protected features also include species-rich communities of aquatic macrophytes, populations of the spined loach, and a population of the spined loach hybrid complex. The focus is therefore on aquatic habitats and species. Zmijiště has a different conservation focus: it protects Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests and peri-Alpine basiphilous thermophilous oak forests. Nature-related features can therefore be distinguished here by their specific protected features: aquatic habitats on the one hand, and two named forest types on the other.

Cycling with a history of mills

The Znojemsko route of the Mlynářská Trail runs through Kyjovice. The Mlynářská Trail is a themed cycling route that introduces visitors to the history of milling and related sights. Its theme differs from Sutny: there, the focus is on archaeological settlement and the rondel; here, it is on the history of milling. These two focuses can help you decide what kind of trip you want, without conflating the different themes. Since route details can change, check the current route before setting out.
