Hodonice lies on the left bank of the Dyje and offers different points of interest for a stay: cultural monuments, a wine-growing community in South Moravia and the Dětské dopravní hřiště Hodonice. If you are looking for a hotel in Hodonice, you can plan your trip around your interests—whether sacred architecture, travelling by public transport or an independent visit to the traffic education park.

Location and Getting There

The popular Podyjí National Park is nearby. Hodonice is also a wine-growing community in South Moravia. Together, these features give the town a regional setting, although its riverside location, wine-growing and the national park are not all the same travel theme. Hodonice is easy to reach by both train and bus. Before travelling, check the relevant timetables to make sure your connection fits your planned visit times.

Churches and Local History

One of the important cultural monuments in Hodonice is the Church of St James the Greater. It has a Romanesque core dating from the first half of the 13th century and is considered a valuable testament to the development of sacred architecture. The term “core” refers to a specific part of the building; the date places this Romanesque element in time. Those interested in historic architecture will therefore find a tangible connection to medieval building history here.

Hodonice is first mentioned in 1281; the patronage of the local church is noted in this context. The year refers to the first mention of the town, while the Romanesque core describes a period in the building’s history. Both offer different perspectives on Hodonice’s past: the town’s early mention and the architecture of its church.

The Chapel of Our Lady offers a different architectural impression. This valuable, small church building stands on the main road in Hodonice. Its floor plan is circular, and a dome topped with a lantern rises above the chapel. The circular floor plan describes the shape of the building, while the dome and lantern form its upper structure. In contrast to the Church of St James, whose Romanesque core defines its building history, the chapel is best understood through its floor plan and domed structure. Hodonice thus brings together two distinct architectural features.

Traffic Education and Playground

The Dětské dopravní hřiště Hodonice is intended for individual public visits for traffic education and time at the playground. Admission is free. The visitor regulations came into effect on 1 March 2024; check the current operating conditions before your visit. You may use your own bicycles, scooters, tricycles and balance bikes on the grounds. Bicycles and pedal go-karts are also provided at the site; check their current availability before basing your plans on them. This makes it possible to decide in advance whether to bring your own vehicle or use the equipment on site.

A Route Between Two Train Stations

The Svatoklementská Trail connects the train stations in Hodonice and Znojmo. At the same time, the trail is currently poorly maintained. Bear this in mind if you plan to include it in your itinerary. The connection between the two stations and the trail’s current condition are separate aspects to consider together.
