Drahonín: Trenck’s Gorge and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Drahonín
Drahonín lies in the hilly landscape of the Vysočina Region. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay featuring hiking, nature, and regional cultural themes, the area offers several specific points of interest: Trenck’s Gorge, trails to Košíkov Castle, and the route via Šafránkův Mill. In the village itself, there is also an outdoor swimming pool, the Chapel of Christ the King, and an annual summer gathering of accordion players. These varied destinations can help you plan your trip around the activities you have in mind.
Nature and folklore at Trenck’s Gorge
Trenck’s Gorge is a short, very steep ravine. A small stream forms waterfalls and cascades there, making the terrain a defining feature for nature lovers and hikers. Fixed ropes are installed in exposed sections around the cascades and waterfalls. Check their condition before visiting, as outdoor safety infrastructure can change. The gorge is designated as a natural monument. The Trenck’s Gorge protected area covers the cadastral areas of Drahonín and Víckov; the protected features also include green shield-moss (Buxbaumia viridis).
Local folklore tells that the famous Pandur Baron Trenck hid in Trenck’s Gorge from the soldiers of Empress Maria Theresa. The gorge thus combines its distinctive landscape with a story that also places the area in a cultural and historical context.
Hiking trails to Košíkov Castle and into the Loučka Valley
A green-marked hiking trail starts in Drahonín and leads to the ruins of Košíkov Castle. In the area around Drahonín, the remains of the walls of a massive prism-shaped tower, as well as traces of the walls and outer bailey, have been preserved. Trail conditions can vary; check them before setting out.
Another route, Drahonín–Šafránkův mlýn–Tišnov, leads from Drahonín via Šafránkův mlýn down into the Loučka Valley, where it joins the red-marked hiking trail towards Tišnov. The historic Šafránkův mlýn in the Loučka Valley dates from 1666. This gives you different destinations and routes to choose from: the trail to the castle ruins or the route via the mill, which joins the hiking trail towards Tišnov.
Chapel, architecture, and summer village life
The Chapel of Christ the King in Drahonín was consecrated in 1935; festive services are held there. Nearby is the Šafránkova hunting lodge, built in 1939 and designed by Bohuslav Fuchs. The cultural points of interest therefore range from a religious building in the village to a structure in the surrounding area.
An annual gathering of accordion players takes place at the summer outdoor venue in Drahonín. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates in advance.
