If you are looking for a hotel in Brno for a cultural trip, it helps to consider the city’s different themes: modern architecture, historic underground spaces, a Baroque corridor system, water engineering, and species conservation. Villa Tugendhat, the ossuary at St. James, the casemates at Špilberk Castle, the water reservoirs at Žlutý kopec, and Brno Zoo each represent clearly distinct areas of interest. You can first decide whether you want to focus primarily on architecture, historical use, or engineering structures. This makes it easier to identify the visits relevant to your trip, without grouping all the sites under a single cultural theme.

Villa Tugendhat: modern architecture

Villa Tugendhat was built in 1929–1930 to a design by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his colleagues. It is the only example of modern architecture in the Czech Republic inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A visit therefore brings together the period in which the house was built and its recognized status: you can understand its architecture not just as a single attraction, but also as part of modern architectural heritage. A 90-minute guided tour takes you through the entire building, including its technical facilities. Check the booking details before your trip, as tour formats may change.

The ossuary at St. James and the casemates at Špilberk Castle

The ossuary at St. James opened to the public in 2012. Visitors can explore the unique rooms, discovered during an underground survey in 2001. 2001 marks the discovery, while 2012 marks the start of public visits; the two years therefore refer to different stages. By the number of skeletal remains, the ossuary is the second largest in Europe after the Paris Catacombs and is one of Brno’s tourist attractions.

The casemates at Špilberk Castle show a different relationship between architectural form and history. A long system of barrel-vaulted corridors was built there during the Baroque period. The casemates served as a prison for almost a century and have been open to the public for 135 years. The sequence runs from the complex as an architectural system, through its former function as a prison, to its long tradition of public visits. This sets the site apart from the ossuary: the vaulted corridors and historical use are central to the casemates, while the ossuary is defined by its discovery and the number of skeletal remains.

Water reservoirs at Žlutý kopec

The reservoirs at Žlutý kopec offer a way to explore building history. Together, they had a capacity of more than 30 million liters and remained in operation until 1997. The complete group of three opened to the public in March 2024 and can be visited in an almost original condition. Check current visiting conditions before your visit. For their time, the brick reservoirs were the largest underground structure in Brno and also the last brick water tank built there. Several layers of history come together here: the original purpose of water storage, the end of operations in 1997, the site’s historical architectural significance, and the opening of the complete group in 2024. A comparison with the casemates highlights the differences: there, the focus is on a corridor system and its use as a prison; here, it is on water storage, capacity, and the reservoirs’ later public accessibility.

Brno Zoo and species conservation

Brno Zoo adds a distinct theme: it participates in international species conservation programs and protects endangered species both in human care and in their original habitats. This focus adds a different subject to the history of buildings and their uses: protecting species both in and outside human care. If species conservation is among your travel interests, it offers another perspective alongside architecture and historic sites.
