Bošovice offers several clearly distinct points of interest: the fortress as the municipality’s most prominent landmark, St. Stanislaus Church with architectural features from different periods, the Viesgrunty natural monument, protected since 1982, and the Papouščí zoologická zahrada. Before your trip, you can decide whether you would like to focus primarily on historic buildings, a distinctive landscape or parrots.

Fortress and church: putting the architectural history in context

The fortress of Bošovice is the municipality’s most prominent landmark and is visible from afar. It is first mentioned in 1398 in connection with a place called “Kopec.” During reconstruction work in the late 1960s and especially in the late 1980s, the tower was altered and an outer bailey was built. The early mention and later alterations mark different stages in its history. To put the dates in context, 1398 should be distinguished from the decades of reconstruction: the first date refers to the mention, while the later periods refer to changes to the tower and complex.

Further architectural features stand out at St. Stanislaus Church. Its nave contains Gothic remains; the church is an oriented, single-nave building with a rectangular floor plan and a rectangular chancel. A single-nave building has one main nave; the rectangular chancel describes the shape of the eastern end of the church. These terms describe the basic layout, while the Gothic remains point to older parts of the building. The church tower was added in 1851; the chancel was also extended and an organ acquired at that time. The Protestant bell tower was built in 1857 for the Protestant minority. The dates relate to different building projects: 1851 to additions to St. Stanislaus Church, and 1857 to the construction of the Protestant bell tower.

Viesgrunty: natural monument and steppe flora

Viesgrunty lies about 2 km southwest of Bošovice. The area preserves steppe flora on slopes facing southwest and west; it has been designated a protected natural monument since 1982. Viesgrunty therefore has a different focus from the fortress and church: here, the slope aspect and plant life are what define the area, rather than building phases or architecture.

Parrots and a possible nature observation activity

The Papouščí zoologická zahrada in Bošovice is the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic. It is home to a total of 200 parrots representing 52 species; these figures may change over time. If the exact number is important for your plans, check again before your visit.

During longer programs at the Papouščí zoologická zahrada, a visit to the nearby Visengrunty nature reserve is possible. Activities include observing nest boxes, catching insects and identifying plants. This option is tied to the longer program format and requires prior arrangement. The distinction is important for planning: the parrot figures describe the collection, while the nature visit is an add-on subject to the program and prior arrangement.
