Tabor: Culture, Routes and Nature
Accommodation in Tabor
In Tabor, the city’s history, themed trails and nature destinations cater to a range of travel interests. The routes also differ considerably in scale: the museum’s underground tour is about 500 metres long, while the Lužnice Valley Trail covers 55 kilometres and is divided into four daily stages. This helps you weigh up a specific cultural theme against a longer route.
Museum, Town Hall and the History of Klokoty
The Husitské Museum is located in the Old Town Hall building on Žižkovo náměstí. Its underground tour is about 500 metres long and includes five stops explaining the former uses of the cellars. The Gothic Town Hall Hall measures 300 m² and is the second-largest Gothic hall of its kind in the Czech Republic. The Town Hall museum therefore brings together the former uses of historic cellars and a significant Gothic hall as two distinct cultural and historical themes.
The Klokoty pilgrimage church complex was established around 1700 on the site of a former Gothic church; the church was completed in 1714. The complex is designated a national cultural monument. However, its temporary closure is important for visitors: due to extensive reconstruction, it is closed to the public from 8 April 2026 to 31 December 2027. Check access before your trip, as the situation may change. The Křížem krážem Klokoty educational trail covers the history and natural features of the area on ten information panels, including its pre-Hussite history.
Themed Trails and Routes of Different Lengths
The Stříbrná educational trail runs along the Tábor–Horky–Větrovy route and explores the region’s long mining history. It is 3,500 metres long and has eight stops. It can be reached by MHD lines 30, 60 and 61; check the line information again before travelling. The František Křižík Electric Railway, known as “Elinka,” offers a historical connection to transport history: regular service began in 1903.
The Lužnice Valley Trail runs through the deep valley of the Lužnice, alongside the historic towns of Tábor and Bechyně. At 55 kilometres, it is divided into four daily stages. Its scale clearly sets it apart from the 3,500-metre-long Stříbrná educational trail: here, you can choose between a trail with eight stops and a longer route divided into daily stages.
Nature Destinations and Conservation
ZOO Tábor is home to almost 500 animals representing 80 species, half of which are endangered. The animal population and species composition may change. The zoo’s main mission is to protect endangered species. It also runs a project to reintroduce European bison to nature reserves in Europe; the project’s status may change over time.
Pintovka Forest Park includes a forest fitness area with seven stations and a wildlife area. Together with the nature themes of the Křížem krážem Klokoty educational trail, Pintovka complements the historical highlights with forests and wildlife. If you would rather focus on nature and conservation than city history during your trip, these places offer a distinct theme.
Events and Visitor Information
Táborská setkání takes place in September, and Táborské Vánoce in December. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the dates and programme in advance. The Tábor City Tourist Information Centre provides information about the city’s history, sights, interesting destinations in the surrounding area and opportunities for active recreation. This lets you include other destinations in your travel plans alongside the trails and cultural themes mentioned above.
