Slaník combines a late Gothic fortress with memorial sites, early settlement records and a former marching event called “Slanická lípa.” Those interested in local history will find a range of topics here: the former function of a fortress, memorials with specific dates and historic routes.

Early History of Slaník

The late Gothic fortress of Slaník served as a feudal residence for about 30 years and gradually fell into ruin after 1505. The first written mention of Slaník dates from 1359; at that time, the local mill belonged to Řepice. The settlement was originally called Dvořec. These dates relate to different aspects: 1359 to the first written mention, about 30 years to its function as a feudal residence, and the period after 1505 to its gradual decline. This allows the early mention of the settlement, the mill’s connection to Řepice and the former name Dvořec to be understood as distinct historical themes.

Memorial Sites and Their Dates

Slaník’s memorial lime tree was planted in 1848 and stands next to a small wayside shrine. A newly planted avenue of apple trees leads to the lime tree. A stone cross from 1907 stands in front of the chapel. Slaník also has a Jan Hus monument, which was supplemented with the names of those killed between 1914 and 1918. The dates relate to different things: 1848 to the planting of the lime tree, 1907 to the cross, and 1914 to 1918 to those killed whose names were added to the monument. The tree and wayside shrine form a nearby landmark; the cross stands in front of the chapel, while the Jan Hus monument is another memorial in the village.

“Slanická lípa” and Former March Routes

In the 2015 events calendar of the Memorial of the Five Prácheň Marches, “Slanická lípa” was listed as a march organized by the Slaník Municipal Office (OÚ). Former route information lists distances of 10, 20, 30 and 50 kilometres; the 30- and 50-kilometre routes were intended for cyclists. The march started in Slaník and offered routes of varying difficulty for walkers and cyclists. The former event format thus combined different distances and levels of difficulty rather than offering just one route. If the march is important for your travel plans, check current dates and route information separately.

Na hrádku

The site known as “Na hrádku” is a long, wooded ridge beside the old road west of Slaník. A surface survey on the southern slope uncovered grey-black pottery sherds that can be dated to the 13th to 14th century. Na hrádku thus connects a specific landscape feature with a find that can be dated. Unlike the fortress, whose former function as a feudal residence is the main focus, here the ridge and the sherds provide the historical connection.

Connection to the Otava

The Slaník watersports campsite is located by a weir on the Otava. Before visiting, check access arrangements and current operating status if you plan to include this place in your itinerary.
