Mečichov: Village Square, Chapels and Landscape
Accommodation in Mečichov
Mečichov combines a village setting with a varied landscape of forests, ponds, fields and meadows. Different themes come together when planning a trip: the circular village square with its chapel, two ecological biocentres and numbered cycling routes. A roadside niche chapel near the village and bus connections to Strakonice, Blatná and Horažďovice are also part of the picture. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Mečichov, you can start by considering whether local history, nature or cycling will be your main focus.
Village Square and Chapels
The large, circular village square is lined with original farmsteads, most of them agricultural. At its centre stands the Chapel of the Virgin Mary and St Adalbert. Here, a single sacred building stands alongside the farm buildings that frame the square. The chapel is listed as an immovable cultural monument; the village square is designated a cultural asset. These two designations refer to different elements of the village’s character. Anyone interested in rural architecture can take in both the chapel and the shape of the square, along with the farmsteads lining it.
Another chapel lies less than a kilometre from the village, on the road to Horažďovice. The roadside niche chapel was built in 1911 and restored in 2005. Its location near Mečichov and these two dates distinguish it geographically and chronologically from the chapel in the village square. While the latter defines the circular centre of the village, the niche chapel is identified by its location on the road to Horažďovice.
Ponds, Meadows and Wooded Hills
The Bílý Kámen ecological biocentre covers an area of 46.4 hectares within the cadastral area of Mečichov. It includes ponds and the surrounding wet and dry meadows. Water features and two different types of meadow together characterise this landscape. The stated area gives a specific sense of the biocentre’s size; the features described also show that its landscape is shaped by more than just the ponds.
The Nad Mečichovem ecological biocentre has a different character. It comprises a rocky hilltop area with a largely wooded remnant of woodland. The two landscapes therefore have distinct profiles: Bílý Kámen, with ponds and wet and dry meadows; and Nad Mečichovem, with hills, boulders and woodland. If you are interested in nature, you can use these differences to decide which landscape features to focus on when planning your trip.
Cycling Routes and Bus Connections
Two numbered routes, each with a different sequence of places, are described for cyclists. Cycling route 1064 runs from Kadov via Čečelovice to Mečichov. Route 312 continues from Mečichov to Bratronice, Jindřichovice and Blatná. The order of the places distinguishes the direction of each route: Mečichov is at the end of the sequence listed for route 1064 and at the start of the continuation on route 312. This makes it possible to distinguish the route that leads to Mečichov from the one that continues from there.
Bus connections also run from Mečichov to Strakonice, Blatná and Horažďovice. These destinations provide a different point of reference from the sequences of places on the cycling routes. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before setting out and plan accordingly.
