Those wishing to combine architecture, religious history and walks through the landscape will find several points of interest in Libějovice. One important distinction matters when planning: as of June 2022, Starý zámek and Nový zámek were not open to the public. By contrast, the church in Lomec is open daily and can be visited inside. Check the current access arrangements for the châteaux before your visit.

Châteaux and Cultural Landscape

Starý zámek is a picturesque Renaissance building dating from the mid-16th century. Its triple entrance gate preserves a passageway with a Gothic vaulted ceiling—a striking architectural detail. Nový zámek offers a different character: it is a large, elongated building in the late Empire style, surrounded by lush parkland. Construction began in 1696, and the building was rapidly completed between 1747 and 1754.

Starý zámek is privately owned. According to access information from June 2022, neither château is open to the public. Their architectural history and differing styles can nevertheless help put the region’s cultural heritage into context. The regional area of Libějovicko-Lomecko includes a Baroque designed cultural landscape, shaped in part by Starý zámek, Nový zámek and Nový Dvůr. The buildings are therefore not merely individual historical landmarks, but also form part of a shared regional design scheme.

Pilgrimage and a Visit to Lomec

The pilgrimage church of Jména Panny Marie in Lomec was built between 1699 and 1704 by Count Buquoy to house a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. It is regarded as a significant work of the High Baroque in Central Europe. As of August 2026, the church is open daily, allowing visitors to see its interior. Check the latest visitor information before setting out.

As of August 2026, Poutní dům Lomec offers single and double rooms to individuals and groups. If this option suits your travel plans, check availability directly for your dates.

Avenue, Trails and Nature

Libějovická alej consists mainly of lime trees and lines an old road. The road connects the pilgrimage chapel of svaté Máří, Nový zámek in Libějovice and the Lomec pilgrimage centre in the Strakonice District. A blue-marked hiking trail and the Julia Zeyer Trail run through the avenue. In 2008, the avenue received the title “Strom hrdina.”

The Historická krajina Netolicko cycling loop offers a different scale: it is about 50 kilometres long and laid out as an educational route with 16 stops. The information boards are in three languages. Its northern section passes through the Libějovicko-Lomecko landscape zone, which includes the municipality of Libějovice and its two châteaux. The routes can therefore be distinguished by their character: the avenue is connected to two named walking trails, while the cycling loop’s length and stops provide guidance for a longer tour.

Libějovický park also adds a natural dimension to the region. Thirty-seven breeding bird species have been recorded there, including five specially protected species. The birdlife is thus a distinct part of the region’s character, alongside its architecture and pilgrimage history.
