Drahenicky: Fortress History and Cultural Landscape
Accommodation in Drahenicky
Drahenicky combines architectural and local history with different connections to the landscape. Anyone looking for a hotel in Drahenicky can focus on the topics that interest them: Tvrz Draheničky represents the area’s architectural history, while the SC4 and an ecological corridor relate to different aspects of the landscape. There are also historical links to Drahenice and a former Easter hike. This makes it possible to get to know the place from several perspectives.
Fortress and Estate History
Tvrz Draheničky is a partly altered, two-storey Renaissance fortress building from the first half of the 16th century. It forms the western part of an estate farmstead. The date places the building in its historical period; its two storeys and position in the western part of the farmstead describe further aspects of its design and setting. As Tvrz has been partly altered, you should not regard it as a Renaissance building preserved completely unchanged. The fortress Tvrz (Draheničky) No. 1 in Svučice is protected as an immovable cultural monument. Its architectural form, connection to the farmstead, and protected status give the fortress a clear place in the cultural history of the village.
The history of the village reaches back beyond the period when Tvrz was built. A report from 1227 mentions two villages called Drahynice in the vicinity of a fortress there. Drahenice and Draheničky later developed from them. The name Drahynice is therefore recorded in the report from 1227; Drahenice and Draheničky are the later names. Draheničky was formerly an independent estate. In 1581, the estate belonged to Krišt. ze Švamberka. The two dates relate to different historical contexts: the report from 1227 names the villages and their later development, while 1581 is associated with the estate and its owner at the time.
Routes and Landscape
The SC4 between Draheničky and Ovčín is a specific point of reference in the landscape. A historical land-use description says that this section was paved, four metres wide, and lined with fruit trees. Before setting out, check the surface and accessibility; the trees there today may differ from those in the historical description.
Another aspect of the landscape is the partially functional Hlibeňský rybník–Babí hůrka ecological corridor. It connects the local biocentres LBC 40 and LBC 17 and is 1,344 metres long. For the corridor, the focus is on the connection between the biocentres and its length, while for the SC4 it is on the paving, width, and fruit trees. These details describe different aspects of the landscape and help distinguish the named features.
Past Events and Regional Traces
In 2019, a traditional Easter hike to Drahenický vrch took place in Drahenice. The date refers to that year’s event. If a hike would be a reason for your trip, check the dates for your preferred travel period in advance.
The former beer deliveries also connect Drahenice and Draheničky: historic beer from Drahenice was delivered to inns in Draheničky. Production was later discontinued. This story adds a former economic and everyday-life connection to the links with the fortress and estate; it belongs to the past of the two villages.
