Discover Ronov nad Doubravou
Accommodation in Ronov nad Doubravou
When planning a trip to Ronov nad Doubravou, two distinct themes stand side by side: the town’s architectural and art history, and the landscape of Doubrava Nature Park. If you are looking for a hotel, you can decide whether you are more interested in historical details around the town or the protected valley landscape. The sights range from a large square and a church to individual façades, statues and a memorial plaque.
Culture and Architectural History
Chittussi Square measures 120 × 100 metres and is bordered by 27 houses. The buildings are therefore an integral part of the square’s appearance: its description encompasses not only the open space but also the houses that enclose it. If you enjoy taking in townscapes rather than just individual buildings, this offers a distinct point of reference for the town’s cultural history.
The present-day Church of Saint Lawrence was built from 1849 to 1852 in the Pseudo-Baroque style. Inside, it has ceiling frescoes by Jaroslav Major that copy Italian originals and depict scenes from the life of Saint Lawrence. This brings together two different aspects in one building: the church’s style and the decorative programme on its ceiling. The architecture and frescoes offer different points of interest if you are interested in religious architecture and art.
House No. 25 on Svatokřížská Street offers another architectural detail. It has a Late Baroque gable with a niche; the back of the niche is adorned with a shallow relief of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. Visitors can also see the Baroque gable of the Kaplanka on the same street. While the niche and its relief at the house draw attention to a specific façade detail, the gable is the named sight at the Kaplanka.
At the lower end of Zámecká Street stand sandstone statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Procopius. Both are examples of 18th-century Baroque sculpture. Another form of commemoration is the memorial plaque for musicologist Dobroslav Orel, which can be seen on a town house. Together with the church, square and houses, the statues and plaque broaden the cultural themes to include sculpture and a dedication to a named individual.
The Doubrava Valley and Getting There
Doubrava Nature Park protects the deep valley of the Doubrava River between Spačice and Ronov nad Doubravou. Its defining features are steep valley slopes and a stony riverbed; the slopes are mostly forested. The remaining stands include beech and ravine maple forests. In this landscape, the focus is therefore on the terrain, riverbed and vegetation—a different emphasis from the individual buildings in town.
