Kněžice: Cycling Routes, Landscape and History
Accommodation in Kněžice
Cycling and landscape take centre stage around Kněžice, alongside the nearby Church of St Martin and historical traces and structures in the village. This gives you several focal points for planning your trip: a clearly quantified, easy connecting route, a circular route with views, and the history of Stusyně. Which one suits your stay depends on whether you place greater emphasis on activity, the natural surroundings or local history.
Landscape between the Doubrava and Doubravka
Kněžice lies in a rolling landscape enclave in the foothills of the Železné hory, between the Doubrava’s left bank and the course of the Doubravka stream. Cycling routes pass through Kněžice or its planning area; the circular route runs through the area. This allows you to consider the landscape setting and the specific route connections together, without treating the individual routes as equivalent.
Cycling routes and circular route
Cycle Route 4234 runs from Mladotice via Kněžice to Spytice. It is 5.5 kilometres long and classified as an easy connecting route. Cycle Route 4188 runs between Podhořany u Ronova and Ronov nad Doubravou through the planning area of Kněžice. This gives you different points of reference when choosing a route: Route 4234 is notable for its length and easy difficulty, while Route 4188 is defined by its endpoints and course through the planning area.
A cycling loop through the area of Kněžice heads towards Běstvina, Třemošnice, Závratec, Mladotice, Ronov nad Doubravou and Chvalovice. It offers views of the Železné hory, Čáslavsko and the Českomoravská vrchovina. Unlike the quantified Route 4234, the circular route is characterised mainly by its directions and views. Route descriptions and conditions may change; check the current signs and surface conditions before setting off.
Getting there and finding your way around
Kněžice is outside the main road and rail links of the East Bohemian region. Three bus routes serve the area. The stops Kněžice and Kněžice, bytovky are located on road III/33733. The number of routes and the names of the stops provide different points of reference for your planning. Check current departures and local transport information before travelling, as bus services and timetables may change.
The Church of St Martin and historical traces
The Church of St Martin lies about two kilometres from Kněžice and was originally the parish church of the vanished village of Stusyně. It stands on a rock above the Doubrava. The first written mention of the village of Stusyně and its parish church dates from 1352. A route from Kněžice to the Church of St Martin is accessible year-round by vehicle and on foot. Before visiting, check current path conditions and access to the church interior.
Kněžice also has historical points of interest: archaeological traces of a fortress at house number 23 are listed as a cultural monument. The masonry chapel in the village was built in 1930 to replace an earlier wooden bell tower. These remains complement the history of Stusyně with the history of buildings and settlement in Kněžice itself.
