Hnátnice between a stream landscape and a high point

Hnátnice lies in the Žamberecká pahorkatina and is a large settlement with a ribbon-like layout along both banks of the Hnátnický potok stream. The stream is therefore as much a part of the village’s character as its settlement pattern. Skalka offers a different measure of the landscape: at 447 metres, it is Hnátnice’s highest point. Those who take the landscape and elevation into account when planning their trip can get their bearings from these two clearly defined features.

Church and sacred history

A key historic landmark is the Church of St Peter and Paul. It was originally built in the Gothic style in the second half of the 14th century. It was remodelled in the mid-19th century, when the tower was also added. The remodelling and addition of the tower mark a later phase in the building’s history than its Gothic origins. For travellers interested in sacred architecture, this chronology offers a tangible way to explore the village’s history.

Beside the church are a statue of St John of Nepomuk dating from 1732 and a Calvary group from 1835. Statues of Saints Peter and Paul, dating from the 19th century, stand on the steps leading to the church. A group depicting the Holy Trinity dates from the early 19th century and was restored in 1885. These sacred works span several periods; the later restoration of the Trinity group also forms part of its history. For those interested in religious art, the individual artworks—with their own histories of creation and restoration—are another focus alongside the architecture.

The Rosary Way

The Rosary Way adds another religious landmark. Created in the 19th century, it comprises fifteen stations corresponding to the mysteries of the three rosaries. It is considered the only pilgrimage route in Czechia to encompass all the mysteries of the Rosary known at the time it was created. The number of stations and their arrangement give the route a clearly defined structure. The period when it was created is also part of what makes it distinctive: the reference is to the mysteries known at that time. For travellers interested in religious tradition, the Rosary Way is a destination in its own right, alongside the church and its artworks.

Cycling the Valdštejn–Šušek route

Cycling also has a specific connection to Hnátnice. The Valdštejn–Šušek cycling route links Písečná and Hnátnice. More precisely, it connects the shore of the pond at Šušek with a local road in Hnátnice-Valdštejn. The two place names describe the connection between the communities; the pond shore and village road specify the stated endpoints. This makes it possible to locate the cycling route and consider it as a travel interest in its own right, alongside the village’s sacred history. If you are choosing Hnátnice with cycling in mind, this route is a specific point of reference for planning your trip.
