Veselá combines a strong connection to nature with a multilayered local history. The Veselka stream flows through the municipality. There are also settlements with distinct historical timelines, a Baroque depiction of Calvary, and the Masaryk School, with its architectural and resistance history. This combination of landscape and history gives Veselá a concrete setting for a stay.

Landscape and Waterways

The Veselka rises in Černá rokle below Skuhrov, flows through Veselá and empties into the Libuňka near Ktová. The municipality is also located in the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. The stream and protected landscape provide two concrete geographical reference points for travelers who want to understand Veselá in the context of its surroundings. The watercourse connects the municipality with its source area and its mouth near Ktová, adding a named geographical line to the regional landscape setting.

Settlements and Local History

Veselá was first mentioned in 1616 in the memorial book of the town of Rovensko. Several other settlement histories highlight different periods. Bítouchov was founded in 1872 with eight cottages and has been part of the municipality of Veselá since 1881. The settlement of Žďár was established in the 17th century; in 1713, it comprised three farms. Kotelsko was established in 1693, after the Kotelský estate was dissolved and fourteen cottages were built there. These details distinguish a first mention from a founding, later inclusion in the municipality, agricultural use and the dissolution of an estate.

Another story behind a place name concerns Vranovsko, which was originally called Drašnov. It received its current name after the cottager Vrána, who ran a business there. Alongside dates and settlement development, this story centers on a person: the place name is linked to Vrána and the activity associated with him.

Architecture and Historical Evidence

A Baroque depiction of Calvary dating from 1776 is located in Kotelisko, a settlement within the municipality of Veselá. The Masaryk School in Veselá offers a much later architectural reference. It was built in 1938–1939 in the Functionalist style; headteacher Karel Hlaváček played a key role in its construction. During the Protectorate, Hlaváček hid Vladimír Krajina, head of the ÚVOD resistance group, in the school. In terms of chronology, the Baroque depiction contrasts with the school architecture of 1938–1939; the school’s history also reaches into the resistance era.

At the Kotelsko archaeological site, a presumed fortress is thought to have stood at “Na hrádku,” a location that can no longer be precisely identified. This possible older fortification adds to the settlement’s history, while its exact location remains unknown. This archaeological reference differs from the dated buildings: the interpretation is plausible, but the site can no longer be pinpointed precisely.

Tradition and Getting There

Local customs include a traditional Masopust carnival masquerade procession organized by the women of Veselá. Dates may vary from year to year. Check the specific date if you would like to include the procession in your trip.

The “Veselá, na návsi” bus stop is served by routes 542, 550 and 553. Routes and timetables can change, so it is a good idea to check the current connection before traveling. The stop and the listed routes provide a concrete starting point if you are planning to arrive by bus.
