Nová Ves nad Popelkou – Hotels Between the Valley and Culture
Accommodation in Nová Ves Nad Popelkou
Nová Ves nad Popelkou can be explored through several themes: landscape, architectural history and culture. The broad valley with the Popelka provides a geographical point of reference; the church and rectory represent different architectural histories, while Cycle Route No. 4277 passes through the village. There is also the surviving masonry of a watermill and annual performances by a theatre group. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can consider these aspects as different priorities when planning your trip.
Landscape and routes
The village lies in a broad valley running from west to east. The Popelka stream flows through the middle of the valley. On the northern side, Císařova hůra, at 547 metres, is the highest point. Its name comes from the owner of farmstead No. 24 (1641–1860). The valley and the high ground thus offer different geographical points of reference: the layout of the village and a named elevation on its northern side.
The Stará Paka–Mladá Boleslav railway line runs along the southern side of the village. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current timetable. Cycle Route No. 4277 also passes through Nová Ves nad Popelkou. Check route conditions before setting off on a cycling trip. This gives you both a railway connection and a specific cycling route to consider when planning, although they do not provide the same type of travel information.
Church and architectural history
The Baroque complex of the Church of St. Procopius includes a chapel belonging to the old cemetery. Its perimeter wall and gate have survived. The church was rebuilt in its present form in 1765–1769. The oldest bell is thought to have been cast in the 14th century. This date is considerably earlier than the rebuilding and represents another historical layer in the church’s history.
The local rectory also has its own building history: a plan was drawn up for it in 1786, and it was built in 1787–1788. The planning and construction years are therefore close together, whereas the estimated date of the oldest bell is much earlier. Along with the church, the rectory adds to the picture of the village’s architectural history, although the two buildings do not date from the same period.
The ground-floor masonry of a watermill has survived. It is considered the last evidence of one of the most interesting buildings of folk architecture in the Podkrkonoší region. This surviving part gives the subject of folk architecture a concrete connection to the village.
Village scenery and culture
At the entrance to Nová Ves nad Popelkou, picturesque log houses welcome visitors. At the upper end of the village, beside the bridge over the Popelka, stands a sandstone statue of a water sprite with gilded details. Its precise location by the bridge and its material make it a clearly identifiable feature of the village scenery.
Theatre is also part of the local culture: the Tyl theatre group from Lomnice nad Popelkou performs in Nová Ves nad Popelkou every year. Check specific performance dates separately. Alongside the landscape and architectural-history themes, you can therefore also choose from recurring cultural events, whose timing may be important when planning your trip.
