Discover Bystrá nad Jizerou
Accommodation in Háje Nad Jizerou
Bystrá nad Jizerou combines a technical cultural monument with trails, landscapes and local traditions. Some of these can be found right in the village, while others are in the surrounding area.
The wooden bridge: monument and transport link
The covered wooden bridge dating from 1922 spans the Jizera at the boundary with Benešov u Semil. It is a suspension bridge and a technical cultural monument. At the same time, it continues to serve its original purpose, is once again open to the public and is an important transport link for the relatively remote municipality. Its construction history and present-day function are therefore both part of its significance to Bystrá. The municipality describes it as the only surviving and operational bridge of its kind in Europe.
Hiking trail and cycling route through Bystrá
A green-marked hiking trail passes through Bystrá nad Jizerou, running between Semily, Jilemnice and Vrchlabí. Cycling Route No. 4174 also passes through the village; it connects Bohemian Paradise with the Krkonoše Mountains. The two routes differ both in their mode of transport and in their regional connections: the places mentioned are key to the hiking trail, while the cycling route links two landscape areas. Trail markings and routes may change, so check the current hiking trail route before setting out.
Landscape and nearby places to visit
The hills and slopes around Bystrá offer views of the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains, as well as Ještěd, Kozákov and Strážník. The nearby hill of Strážník is a national natural monument. A melaphyre rock city lies on its western side. Nearby attractions also include the Bozkov Dolomite Caves, Bohemian Paradise and the Krkonoše Mountains. This gives you the option of choosing between routes that pass through the village and landscape attractions in the surrounding area.
Historic buildings and local history
Bystrá is home to many well-preserved 19th-century chalets. They are typical of the Krkonoše foothills; most are still inhabited, while some are used as holiday homes. These houses add another dimension to the local built heritage alongside the wooden bridge, a unique technical monument. Bystrá was first mentioned in writing in 1320. In 2020, a commemorative pine was planted near Těhník Hill, on the boundary of the cadastral area, to mark the village’s 700th anniversary. The two dates represent different historical milestones: the early written record and a later anniversary gesture.
Commemorative traditions and events
After the First World War, the sports club erected the war memorial, where commemorative ceremonies are held annually. Bystrá’s volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1893, remains active and plays an important role in the village’s cultural life. The first fire station, built in 1907, houses an exhibition on the history of the local fire brigade. Clubs and the municipal administration also organize balls, a children’s carnival, Children’s Day, theatre performances and the burning of the witches. Event dates vary. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates in advance.
Horse riding as a separate activity
Ranch Bystra works with beginner and advanced riders. Its enclosed 20-hectare grounds include a riding trail through the forest and across pastures with livestock. This is a separate activity to consider when planning your trip, alongside the hiking and cycling routes through the village. Contact the provider to ask about specific participation and visiting options.
