St. George’s Church: Building History and Church History
The church of St. George acquired its present form in 1739; Count Jan Kounic had it built that year. In 1863, the church received a new tower with a bell frame made of sandstone blocks. The new tower replaced an older, dilapidated wooden tower. A bell frame is the structure that supports the bells; this information therefore connects its function with the building material described.
The church’s history goes back further: in 1293, the church in Chlum was separated from the Bezděz parish and given its own priest. This date concerns church organization, whereas 1739 concerns the church’s present form and 1863 the replacement of the tower. The three dates therefore relate to different aspects: church affiliation, architectural form, and a later structural change.
The municipal planning documentation, updated in 2024, lists St. George’s as an immovable cultural monument. The year 2024 refers to the planning update, not to a construction phase of the church.
Earlier crafts and agriculture
Earlier forms of economic activity are also part of the local history. A stoneware factory once stood near the village. Apricots were once grown on a larger scale in Chlum and the surrounding area. These examples differ both in type of activity and in location: the factory represents commercial production near the village, while the cultivation represents agriculture in Chlum and its surroundings. Together, they complement the church’s history with an economic perspective on the area.
