Zdobnice: Nature and Activities in the Eagle Mountains
Accommodation in Zdobnice
Zdobnice lies in the valley of the river of the same name in the Eagle Mountains, between the Říčky and Deštné ski resorts. Most of the municipality lies within the Eagle Mountains Protected Landscape Area and has a distinctly recreational character. If you are looking for a hotel in Zdobnice, protected nature, cycling and hiking opportunities, or winter activities can shape the focus of your stay. Churches and chapels, as well as a viewpoint overlooking the valley, also define the town.
Mountain Landscapes and Protected Nature
The Kačerov Nature Reserve is located within the municipality. It protects wet meadows, transitional mires, springs and mountain meadows that are home to rare and endangered species. The area is freely accessible to visitors; however, entering the mire and spring areas is discouraged. If you explore the landscape, you should therefore avoid these areas.
Another natural attraction is the U Kunštátské kaple Natural Monument. It protects a ridge mire with remarkable flora in the Eagle Mountains. The natural monument can be viewed from the red-marked ridge trail without entering the protected area. For orientation, it is helpful to note the difference from Kačerov: access there is free, while entering the mire and spring areas is expressly discouraged.
Hiking and Cycling
Zdobnice offers suitable conditions for hiking and cycling. The singletrack network includes more than ten kilometres of mountain bike trails, which are ridden in one direction. The main trailhead is by the fire pond in Zdobnice. There is also a skills trail, a pump track, a bicycle service station and an electric bike charging station. Trail conditions and access may be subject to seasonal restrictions, so check local conditions and infrastructure availability before travelling.
The landscape around Zdobnice is also ideal for walks and mushroom picking outside the main season. Alongside mountain biking, the town therefore offers opportunities for quieter activities. When planning, you can decide whether you want to spend most of your time on the trails or explore the surrounding area on foot.
Winter Activities and Cross-Country Skiing
The Ski Centrum Zdobnice regularly offers evening skiing on its main slope. Dates depend on the season and may change, so check them before your visit. The ski centre also has a 100-metre slope with a gentle gradient and a rope tow. It is suitable for learning the basics of skiing and snowboarding.
Another winter option is the cross-country skiing loop, which passes directly through Zdobnice. A suitable starting point is considered to be about 200 metres above the Zdobnice church, on a yellow-marked hiking trail. The location is approximate, and seasonal conditions may affect access to trail starting points. Check current conditions before your trip, especially if you want to pinpoint your starting point. Evening skiing on the main slope and a cross-country ski loop through the town offer two different ways to spend your winter stay.
Churches, Chapels and Valley Views
The town’s architectural history can also be traced through several sites. The Church of the Good Shepherd was consecrated in 1789. The Kunštátská Chapel, also known as the Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, was built in Zdobnice in 1671; the Chapel of St Anne dates from 1838. The Chapel of St Anne offers views across the entire Zdobnice Valley. Those wishing to combine culture and scenery will find specific historic sites and a viewpoint alongside the protected natural areas.
