Vlkov: Village Architecture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Vlkov
Vlkov appeals to travelers who want to combine their stay with a look at village architecture, historical landmarks and the surrounding landscape. Local points of interest range from features of the village square and a distinctive barn to a war memorial and a point in a triangulation network. For time outdoors, the V Lužinách pond and the views from the edges of the village offer different ways to explore. If you are looking for a hotel in Vlkov, you can first consider whether you would prefer to focus on cultural history, observing nature or both.
Village Architecture Between the Square and the Barn
The “Vlkov Gates” are a characteristic feature of the village square’s architecture. The original, tasteful rural buildings also play a major role in shaping Vlkov’s appearance. Together, these features give an impression of how important architectural design is to the character of the village. The polygonal barn adds a distinctive feature of its own: it is the last surviving polygonal barn in the Hradec region. However, it is only open to visitors occasionally, so check before your visit whether access is possible. This allows you to distinguish two different aspects of the local architecture: a feature of the square’s design and a single building of regional significance.
Places of Remembrance and the History of Surveying
The war memorial in Vlkov dates from 1929. It bears the names of 18 victims of the First World War and two victims of the Second World War. The association with two wars and the numbers given for each give the memorial a clear historical context. The reconciliation cross tells a different story: after it was discovered in 1993, it was re-erected about 50 meters from its original location. The site’s historical themes therefore include not only remembrance of war victims but also the change in the cross’s location.
South of Vlkov, in a field near the road to Hradec Králové, stands a military triangulation pillar. It is part of the Josefov triangulation network dating from 1874 and is one of only three surviving points in the network. The pillar adds a different historical context to the places of remembrance: the history of surveying. Those interested in Vlkov’s history can therefore distinguish between several themes: the remembrance of people, the story of a relocated cross and the triangulation network.
Landscape: Pond and Views
The V Lužinách pond lies near the edge of the village and is suitable for walks and observing nature. The views offer a different perspective: from the eastern side of Vlkov, the vista opens onto the Orlické Mountains; to the north, it is roughly bounded by the well-known panorama of the Krkonoše Mountains. When choosing a landscape focus, you can therefore distinguish between observing nature at the pond and enjoying the views to the east or north.
Refreshments in Vlkov
The visitor-friendly Hospůdka Pod Lipami offers three types of beer, homemade lemonades and coffee, as well as simple dishes: pizza, marinated Hermelín cheese, pickled sausage, sausage and rollmops. In summer, outdoor seating is available. If outdoor seating is important to your plans, check before your visit whether the seasonal outdoor area will be open at your chosen time. The food selection may change over time. The hospůdka is a place to stop for a drink or a simple meal during your stay.
