Třebechovice Pod Orebem: Nativity Scene Art, Churches and Oreb
Accommodation in Třebechovice Pod Orebem
When planning a stay, Třebechovice Pod Orebem brings together several themes: nativity scene art, churches, a historic watercourse and routes on Oreb. You can consider cultural history and the specific route descriptions as separate points of focus.
Nativity Scene Art and Museum
The Třebechovický Proboštův betlém is the only nativity scene in Czechia to have been declared a national cultural monument, in 1999. More than a century ago, the work, including its mechanism, was made entirely of wood. It measures 6.9 × 1.9 × 2.2 metres and contains more than 2,000 carved parts.
The Třebechovické muzeum betlémů specialises in documenting static and mechanical nativity scenes. Static and mechanical nativity scenes represent two different forms of nativity scene making: immobile scenes and works with a mechanism. During an individual visit, you can see the Probošt nativity scene’s mechanism, including its unique wooden mechanism. The museum is located at Masarykovo náměstí 1426, 503 46 Třebechovice pod Orebem.
Churches and Cultural Activities
The Evangelical Church in Třebechovice was built between 1876 and 1880 in the Neo-Romanesque style. St Andrew’s Church is a Baroque church dating from 1767 to 1771. The two construction periods are therefore about a century apart, with Baroque and Neo-Romanesque architecture creating distinct impressions. Oreb is also home to the Church of Božího Těla, which is listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
The RaDost Gallery can also be visited outside regular opening hours by prior telephone arrangement. Cultural events organised by the local culture centre at the Museum of Nativity Scenes include the “Around Oreb” cycling tour.
Routes on Oreb
The Naučná stezka Oreb starts at Masarykovo náměstí, leads up to Oreb and returns to the square via Hajnišův mlýn. At its six stops, the educational trail presents the history of the buildings and monuments along the route. The Třebechovická stopa is a short sightseeing loop of approximately 3 kilometres. This gives you two distinct ways to choose a route: a named trail with historical stops, or a short loop with an approximate distance.
The Alba and the Dědina
The artificial watercourse Alba, also locally known as Vantroka, was created as early as the first half of the 16th century to supply water to a system of ponds, mills and sawmills. The watercourse passes through Častolovice, Týniště nad Orlicí and the forests near Bědovice before reaching the centre of Třebechovice pod Orebem, where it flows into the Dědina. Alba adds a landscape perspective to the nativity scene art: the artificial watercourse combines a historic supply function with a route that reaches the town centre.
