Suchý Důl: Hiking and Pilgrimage History
Accommodation in Suchý Důl
Suchý Důl combines a landscape shaped by sandstone formations, viewpoints, and gorges with marked trails and religious sites. When choosing a destination, you can weigh two interests against each other: outdoor activity and history, reflected in chapels, pilgrimage routes, and a Stations of the Cross trail. A gentle nature trail, more challenging excursions, and cycling routes over mountain ridges offer different ways to discover the town and its surroundings.
Hiking, Cycling, and Landscapes
Marked hiking trails lead through Suchý Důl and its surroundings, offering views of Broumovsko and Policko. The landscape is suitable both for walks and for more challenging excursions. The Suchý Důl nature trail is easy and undemanding; you can allow about 1.5 hours for it.
When choosing a route, you therefore have two different points of reference: the nature trail has a clearly specified difficulty level and approximate duration, while the marked hiking trails are characterized by their course through the town and its surroundings, as well as by the views of Broumovsko and Policko. This can help you decide whether you prefer an easy route with a manageable time commitment or broader landscape views.
Cycling is also an option in Suchý Důl: three cycling routes pass through the town, including routes over mountain ridges in the Broumovské stěny National Nature Reserve. Compared with the hiking trails, they offer a different relationship to the landscape: the hiking trails provide views of Broumovsko and Policko, while the cycling routes cross mountain ridges in the reserve. If you are choosing between hiking and cycling, these different ways of experiencing the landscape can help guide your decision.
A waterfall and a rock formation offer specific natural features to visit. In Hájkova rokle, a small waterfall called Suchodolská Niagára cascades down. Čertova skála is a free-standing rock formation beside the path from the upper chapel to Hlavňov. These are different landmarks: a small waterfall in a gorge and a free-standing rock along a path.
Chapels and Pilgrimage Routes
The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes was built in 1883 in Ochozský lesík. The Vambeřická cesta, marked with small monuments and crosses, passes through the southern part of Suchý Důl. Another route is the Stations of the Cross trail at Soudní brána: it has twelve stations and begins at Soudní brána beside a forest spring. It was completed in 1893.
The two routes can be distinguished by their different features: small monuments and crosses mark the Vambeřická cesta, while the twelve stations and the starting point at Soudní brána define the Stations of the Cross trail. Religious heritage is reflected here both in a marked route and in the clear sequence of a Stations of the Cross trail.
Since the blessing of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary on September 8, 1990, the Rosary Brotherhood has regularly held prayers and services there. All traditional holidays are also celebrated throughout the year in Suchý Důl and Slavný. Religious life thus encompasses both historic sites and routes, as well as recurring traditions in both villages.
The dates refer to different events: 1883 marks the construction of the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1893 the completion of the Stations of the Cross trail, and September 8, 1990 the blessing of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary. This chronology helps distinguish the history of the buildings, the history of the routes, and religious practice.
