Střevač combines a long architectural history with a landscape where ridges, hiking trails, a pond, and wet meadows each add their own character. Its cultural landmarks are found in the settlements of Střevač, Štidla, and Nadslav; its natural features include Mordýř Pond and the Nadslav Natural Monument. Historic architectural styles and the landscape thus shape different aspects of this destination.

Baroque Architectural History in Střevač

The baroque granary in Střevač was built in 1690 using stone from the original fortress, which was demolished at the time. Its construction links the building to an earlier phase in the town’s history: the fortress material was reused to build the granary. Two other baroque landmarks in Střevač date from 1754. The column with the statue of the Immaculata and the late Baroque Calvary ensemble are both protected as cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. The ensemble is located opposite the municipal office.

The dates help place the different architectural forms in chronological order: the 1690 granary is followed by the column and Calvary ensemble from 1754. In Štidla, the sequence extends later to a statue from 1780. Together, these dates provide a concrete overview of several periods in local architectural history, without conflating the granary, column, ensemble, and statue into a single type of monument.

Heritage Zone and Historic Buildings in Štidla

The late Baroque Statue of the Crucifixion, dating from 1780, stands in the village square in Štidla. It is considered a cultural monument of regional importance. Štidla’s rural heritage zone also has a precisely defined designation: it was established by Czech Ministry of Culture Decree No. 413/2004 Sb. of 24 June 2004 and has been in effect since 1 January 2005.

The rural farmstead No. 8 offers a different perspective on the village’s history. It has been preserved as a farm complex dating from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and retains its original architectural layout. This makes it possible to distinguish different scales of historic buildings in Štidla: the individual statue, the designated village zone, and a farmstead with its original layout preserved.

Church and Natural Features in Nadslav

The single-nave Gothic Church of St. Procopius in Nadslav provides an architectural contrast to the baroque monuments in Střevač and Štidla. The church includes a cemetery enclosed by a stone wall and a wooden bell tower dating from the 19th century. The church has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964. The Gothic church and the later bell tower offer two distinct points of reference in time within the complex described here.

Alongside the buildings, habitats for amphibians are among the area’s natural features. Mordýř Pond and the adjoining wet meadows provide a habitat for fire-bellied toads and other amphibians. The Nadslav Natural Monument protects the habitat of the highly endangered fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina). The two descriptions emphasize different aspects: the pond is notable for several amphibian species and the wet meadows, while the Natural Monument focuses particularly on the habitat of this endangered species.

Ridges and Landscape

Střevač lies between two long ridges. The northern ridge is covered with coniferous trees and crossed by hiking trails. The eastern and northern parts of the municipality belong to the UNESCO Český ráj Geopark. The baroque-designed landscape of Mariánská zahrada also extends into the eastern part of the municipal area; it includes the settlements of Střevač, Nadslav, and Štidla. The landscape description thus brings together wooded ridges and hiking trails with a named historic landscape.

Střevač is served by bus connections and roads that run through the municipal area. Check the current bus timetable for your travel dates. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Střevač, the area’s different highlights can help you choose what to focus on: architectural history, landscape, or the natural features around the pond, wet meadows, and protected area.
