Discover Opočno
Accommodation in Opočno
Opočno combines a rich castle and town history with an extensive park and marked walking trails. The town offers a range of attractions to help you plan your trip, including historic architecture, exhibitions and routes through the town and park. The seasonal leisure facilities at Koupaliště Broumar are another option available locally.
Castle Park and Castle History
Opočno Castle Park was redesigned as an English landscape park in the early 19th century and covers 22 hectares. Its features include paths and stone stairways, as well as romantic viewpoints, waterfalls and a belvedere. Exotic trees and shrubs, a palm house and a summer pavilion add to the park. The summer pavilion itself is currently closed to the public.
The Renaissance summer pavilion was built in 1601–1602; a 270-metre-long covered passage connects it to the castle. The state castle has a history dating back to the 11th century. It developed from a Gothic castle into a distinguished Renaissance residence of the Trčků z Lípy family and later became the property of the Colloredo-Mansfeld family. Its collections include a historic collection of weapons and armour, one of the most important in Czechia. The tour routes include rooms on the first and second upper floors; check before your visit to see whether they are open seasonally.
The park can be accessed through gates from Zámecká, Hradecká and Švamberk streets. Another entrance leads from the arcaded courtyard into the park during castle opening hours. As access arrangements may depend on operating conditions, it is advisable to check them before travelling.
Exhibitions and Buildings in Opočno
The exhibition “Opočno in the Mirror of Time” is housed in the authentic rooms of one of the town’s oldest houses. The building itself serves as an exhibit. The displays include historical materials about the town, such as photographs, illustrations and three-dimensional exhibits. The exhibition therefore focuses both on the rooms and on the town’s history as presented there.
Other buildings represent different periods. The Zvonice is a Renaissance tower dating from 1594 and forms part of the Church of the Virgin Mary complex. On Kupkovo náměstí stands the Mariánský (morový) sloup, a work by the Italian sculptor Giovanni Battista Bulla dating from 1718. The history of the Capuchin monastery in Opočno and the Church of the Nativity of the Lord dates back to 1674, when the foundation stone of the Baroque complex was laid. These dates help distinguish the different stages of the town’s architectural history.
Walking Trails, Wildlife and Seasonal Activities
The Opočenská naučná stezka consists of three overlapping circular routes marked in different colours, with a total of 14 stops. The main green route is 11 kilometres long and passes through the town, the park and the wildlife reserve. It offers a specific way to explore the different landscapes in a single circuit. Obora Opočno is home to mouflon, fallow deer and Dybowski’s sika deer; the species composition may change over time.
Koupaliště Broumar has a large pool with a waterslide and other attractions, as well as a small children’s pool. The facilities are seasonal. Pedal boats, rowing boats and canoes are also available for hire on site. If these leisure activities are important to your plans, check the pool’s current opening arrangements and boat-hire availability before your visit.
When choosing a destination, you can weigh up different options: the castle park and architecture, the town’s history as presented in its exhibition and buildings, or a circular route through the town, park and wildlife reserve. These places and activities offer specific themes for your stay in Opočno, without every visit having to focus on the same things.
