Discover Mezimestí: Hiking, Views and Culture
Accommodation in Mezimestí
Mezimestí appeals to travelers who want to combine hiking with cultural and railway history. Local attractions range from a marked circular trail and a challenging ridge hike to a Baroque church, a distinctive Stations of the Cross, and sites connected with railway and industrial history. AQA LAND has a different focus: relaxation, swimming, sports and unwinding; its operating schedule may vary by season.
Hikes and views
The Okolo Meziměstí circular trail is marked, 15.7 km long and rated moderate. It starts in the town square, where it follows red- and blue-marked trails and crosses a railway crossing. By contrast, the Vyhlídková hřebenovka po Javořích horách is a challenging hike. It starts at Meziměstí railway station and leads via Vižňov to the ridge of the Javoří hory. The two routes thus differ both in their stated difficulty and their course: one is a circular trail, while the other leads from the town through a district and up to the ridge.
Ruprechtický Špičák is another distinctive landmark. It lies within Meziměstí, is 880 m high, has an observation tower, and is the highest point in the Náchodsko region. The mountain therefore adds a landscape highlight of its own to the routes.
Church and Stations of the Cross in Vižňov
The Baroque church of Kostel sv. Anny stands in the district of Vižňov. It belongs to the so-called Broumov group of churches and has been protected as a national cultural monument since July 1, 2022. Both its Baroque architecture and its membership in this group of churches are important features in understanding the area.
Another historical detail can be found in the present-day Křížová cesta Vlasty Hampla: it features cast-iron plaques from the late 19th century, mounted on wooden stands. The materials, date and mounting give this Stations of the Cross a specific connection to local cultural history.
Railway and industrial history
The railway station is also part of Mezimestí’s history. The ČD Meziměstí station building on line 026 was built in 1875 in connection with the construction of the Choceň–Meziměstí–state border and Meziměstí–Broumov–state border at Otovice railway lines. The station is a technically significant historic structure. The Meziměstí Railway Museum presents the history and circumstances surrounding the construction of the Choceň–Meziměstí line. The station and museum thus offer different perspectives: the historic building on the one hand, and the history of the line’s construction on the other.
Centrum Walzel offers a look at the town’s industrial history. It is housed in the former textile factory of Josef Walzel and Sons, which was converted into a multifunctional commercial and entertainment center. The site thus connects its former use as a factory with the center’s present-day function.
