Jinolice: Ponds, Wetlands and Local History
Accommodation in Jinolice
Jinolice brings together a waterside landscape, protected wetlands and local history. For a nature-focused stay, the Jinolické rybníky and their distinctive wetlands take centre stage; historic buildings and memorial sites reveal another side of the area. You can tailor your trip to your interests: swimming and camping, a marked hiking route or individual traces of architectural and military history.
Ponds and protected wetlands
Rybník Vražda pond is designated as a protected natural monument. The protected area around the pond preserves wet meadows with rare plants and animals. For nature lovers, the pond and the protected meadows go hand in hand. Another protected wetland is Oborská luka, also known as Oborská louka. It lies above Oborský pond, the largest of the three Jinolické rybníky. In brief: Rybník Vražda represents a protected pond with wet meadows; for Oborská luka, its location above Oborský is the defining feature.
The Jinolické rybníky also offer opportunities for swimming, camping and leisure activities. Specific conditions may vary by season. If swimming or camping is important for your travel dates, check current availability before making plans.
Hiking trails and getting there
A green-marked hiking route runs from Jinolice railway station via the Jinolické rybníky to Prachovské skály and is about 3.5 km long. It provides a direct connection between the railway station, the ponds and the destination. As trail markings can change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out. Jinolice railway station is on the Turnov–Jičín line; if you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date.
Another hiking option follows the blue-marked trail to the Brada castle site, in the direction of Jičín–Prachovské skály. The destinations mentioned are key to choosing between the routes: the green route goes via the ponds to Prachovské skály, while the blue trail leads to the Brada castle site.
Architectural and military history
Local historical landmarks include buildings and memorial sites. The former mill at house No. 37 is one of the local historic wooden houses and is listed as part of Jinolice’s local cultural heritage. It dates from the early 19th century. The brick bell tower stands beneath a linden tree on the village green by the municipal office. Together, these buildings represent different forms of local cultural heritage: a historic wooden house with a milling history and a bell tower on the village green.
Several military memorial sites relate to 29 June 1866. In Jinolice, a cast-iron monument to those who fell in the Battle of Jičín stands beside road I/35 between Jičín and Turnov. A helmet is mounted above the decorated cornice. In the centre of the village, a war grave commemorates 12 Austrian soldiers, 24 Prussian soldiers and one officer who fell in the Battle of Jičín. Another war grave lies by Rybník Vražda pond in the Malá Jinolice district. It commemorates 92 soldiers who fell near Malá and Velká Jinolice on the same day. The two graves differ in location and in the number and local attribution of the soldiers they commemorate.
