Accommodation in Horní Alberice
Local history, limestone heritage and seasonal routes offer different ways to shape a stay in Horní Alberice. If you are looking for hotels in the area, these themes can help you decide whether you are especially interested in Muzeum Vápenka, the history of the settlement, or its paths and natural features.
Seven centuries of local history
Horní Albeřice is one of the oldest settlements in the Krkonoše Mountains; it was first mentioned as early as the late 13th century. A distinctive feature preserved there is the so-called lánové hospodářství (strip farming)—the only place in the Krkonoše Mountains where it has survived. In the 19th century, limestone quarrying and lime burning were important parts of the local livelihood.
Muzeum Vápenka explores the history of the Albeřice Valley: short stories and extensive visual material present seven centuries of life in the valley. The museum is housed in an octagonal stone tower belonging to a shaft lime kiln from the 19th century. It is located in Zone I of Krkonoše National Park, in the Horní Albeřice part of the municipality. The museum thus brings together local life history and a structure dating from the era of lime burning.
Cycling and cross-country skiing in Horní Albeřice
The red-marked Cesta bratří Čapků trail runs from Pomezní Boudy via Lysečiny, Horní Albeřice and Trutnov to Úpice. In summer, the route can be cycled; in winter, it can be used for cross-country skiing. Short detours from the Cesta bratří Čapků lead to Muzeum Vápenka. This makes it possible to combine a section of the route with a visit to the exhibition, without treating the trail itself and the museum visit as the same thing.
The Krkonošská magistrála cross-country ski route also passes through Horní Albeřice, between Lysečinská bouda and Rýchorská bouda. Snow conditions and grooming may vary seasonally, so take this into account when planning. Another described route runs from Černá hora via Albeřice to Malá Úpa. After a quieter stretch through forests and meadows, it reaches Horní Albeřice. The route descriptions give different starting points and courses—useful when choosing a suitable trip based on its precise route.
Limestone and distinctive natural features
The Albeřické quarries provide a habitat for protected, calcicole plants and animals. Bishop's Quarry is a deep open-pit quarry; even in summer, the temperature there remains around 7 °C. Albeřická Cave contains an underground lake approximately 15 metres deep. In addition to its role in local history, this limestone heritage has its own geological dimension.
If you are interested in the landscape, several aspects can be considered side by side: the habitats in the quarries, the cool temperature at Bishop's Quarry, and the underground lake in the cave.
Plan your visit to Muzeum Vápenka
Keys to the exhibition can be borrowed daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the reception of Penzion Vápenka, Horní Albeřice 13. Admission to the exhibition is free. Check the current key collection hours before your visit, as arrangements may change. If you are planning to cross-country ski, also bear in mind that snow conditions and grooming on the Krkonošská magistrála vary by season.
