Chyjice between sacred history and landscape

Chyjice combines sacred architectural and artistic history with a landscape shaped by the Mrlina River. If you are looking for a hotel in Chyjice, these themes can give your trip a clear focus: the Church of Sts Simon and Jude and historic works of art represent the history of the town; the Mrlina and the Chyjická stráň Natural Monument add a distinctive landscape element. Chyjice lies in the valley of the Mrlina, formerly known as the Leština. Its banks border the settlement for up to 2.5 kilometres.

Church and historic works of art

The Church of Sts Simon and Jude was remodelled in the Baroque style by F. Spannbrucker between 1698 and 1700. In addition to the church, the protected monument ensemble includes a bell tower and an enclosing wall with a gate. The church houses an organ made in 1892 at the workshop of organ builder Josef Kobrle in Lomnice. Its date and workshop attribution add a distinct historical detail to the building’s history.

The statue of St John of Nepomuk is also a notable work of High Baroque sculpture. It is made of light sandstone and features a relief of St Charles Borromeo on its front. The statue was declared a cultural monument on 26 November 2002; its restoration was completed in July 2025. Its material, artistic classification and relief make it a subject in its own right, alongside the church architecture.

The Boží muka wayside shrine, dating from 1779, stands right next to the church. It consists of a column with a relief of the Virgin Mary and a small chapel with a relief of the crucified Jesus. The shrine was restored between 1994 and 1996 and declared a cultural monument in November 2002. The information about its creation, restoration and protected status shows different stages in its history, while the two reliefs describe the shrine’s distinctive form.

Natural surroundings and cycling route

The Chyjická stráň Natural Monument lies between Chyjice and Dolany, above the Mrlina River on a wooded southwest-facing slope. This protected landscape site adds a different focus to the sacred architectural monuments: here, the setting by the river and on the slope takes centre stage. If you are weighing up cultural history and natural surroundings for your trip, Chyjice offers clearly distinct themes for both interests.

Cycling Route No. 4368 runs along the edge of Chyjice and connects locally significant sights, including hillforts and castles. Check the route before setting out. For your trip planning, the cycling route can be considered a point of interest in its own right, alongside the town’s history and the natural monument, without combining the different themes into a single sightseeing route.
