Vyšehořovice: Architectural History and the U skal Natural Monument
Accommodation in Vyšehořovice
Vyšehořovice combines architectural history with a specific natural history destination. The fortress, the ruins of St. Martin’s Church, and the Late Gothic–Renaissance bell tower reflect different architectural styles and historical backgrounds; U skal is a site of fossil plants from the Upper Cretaceous. When planning, therefore, consider both your interests and the relevant access conditions.
The Fortress and Church Architecture: Different Historical Periods
The fortress in Vyšehořovice was built in the 14th and 15th centuries and served as the seat of the Vladiks of Vyšehořovice. The complex originally measured 30 × 40 meters. A high wall surrounded it; the complex included a residential palace, farm buildings, and a tall tower. A moat provided additional protection. The wall, moat, and tower illustrate the fortified layout, while the residential palace and farm buildings complete the picture of a seat with living and working areas.
The fortress is located on the grounds of a former agricultural estate, now a private farm, and is not open to the public. Take this restriction into account when planning, and check the access status if you are considering a visit.
The ruins of the Romanesque-Gothic St. Martin’s Church are the oldest surviving building in Vyšehořovice. The Vyšehrad Chapter founded it in the early 14th century; it was consecrated in 1329. The original church consisted of a square presbytery with a ribless cross vault and a rectangular nave with a flat ceiling. Today, only a small part of the nave remains. The presbytery is the choir area, while the nave is the church’s longitudinal main space. These terms help explain the original layout without confusing it with the surviving part of the nave.
The Late Gothic–Renaissance bell tower is a massive, four-sided building with large Gothic pointed-arch windows and an attic at the top. Compared with the church, the bell tower’s architectural emphasis is on its solid form and pointed-arch windows.
U skal: Fossils and an Unmarked Forest Path
The protected U skal Natural Monument lies in the southern part of the cadastral area of Vyšehořovice. It is a unique and exceptionally species-rich site of fossilized plants from the Upper Cretaceous, of worldwide significance. U skal thus adds a natural history highlight alongside the historic buildings.
U skal lies on the southwestern edge of Vyšehořovice, on the left bank of the Výmola stream, and can be reached via an unmarked forest path. Since path conditions may change, check the condition of the path locally.
Bus Connections and Travel Planning
Vyšehořovice has bus connections to Prague, Čelákovice, Brandýs nad Labem, and Český Brod. If you plan to use one of these connections, check the timetable for your travel dates so you can plan your arrival day accordingly.
