Stranný: Hiking and History
Accommodation in Stranný
Stranný combines hiking connections with a tangible local history. A hiking route of around 20 kilometres passes through the village, goes by a chapel (Boží muka), and returns to Neveklov. The red-marked hiking route passes Provodná hora; a monument to those who fell in the First World War stands on Provodná. Road II/114 also connects Stranný with several places along the corridor. Together, these connections provide an overview of hiking, history and local orientation.
Hiking and Orientation
The hiking route described is around 20 kilometres long and passes through Stranný, goes by a chapel and returns to Neveklov. At this length, it can be considered a longer hike and planned as a focus of the day. The sequence makes the route clear: Stranný is along the way, and Neveklov is the return point. For your planning, the distance and return point answer different questions: the approximate distance conveys the scope, while Neveklov marks the end of the route described.
The chapel (Boží muka) dates from the mid-19th century and is located near Stranný, above the village. There is a signpost and a rest area next to the chapel above Stranný. The red-marked hiking route also passes Provodná hora. Different features help with orientation: the chapel is a specific structure along the route described, while the red marking and Provodná hora identify a named route.
Monument and Local History
The monument to those who fell in the First World War stands on Provodná. It was ceremonially unveiled on 18 September 1921 and bears the names of 26 locals who fell or died in the war of 1914–1918. The dates refer to two different things: 1921 is the date of the unveiling, while 1914–1918 are the war years. This makes it easy to distinguish the occasion of the dedication from the period to which the names refer.
The monument was erected on a hill above the village with the aim of making it visible from each of the ten settlements then associated with Stranný. Subsequent tree growth may have changed the view today. When placing the monument in its landscape context, you can distinguish the historical intention of visibility from the present-day view, which may have changed as the trees grew.
Another historical episode concerns the use of Stranný: after its confiscation, the place was used by the Prosečnice SS Panzer Grenadier School.
Stranný on the Road Connection
The road also helps you place Stranný in the context of a journey. Road II/114 passes through the village and connects Benešov, Neveklov, Stranný, Nový Knín and Dobříš. If your trip includes several of these places, you can include Stranný in your plans as part of this road connection. This is a different travel connection from the hike: the road identifies a corridor between the places named, while the hiking route and monument mark local points of interest in Stranný.
