Niměřice: Castle History and Countryside
Accommodation in Niměřice
Niměřice offers a historic focus around its castle and chapel, as well as countryside along the Strenický potok. These offer two different interests to consider when planning your trip: architecture and local history on the one hand, and relaxation in lowland forests and walks in the surrounding area on the other. If you are looking for a hotel in Niměřice, you can combine these interests with the activities you plan to enjoy locally.
Castle and Local History
Jan Weithof had Niměřice Castle built in 1832 in the Late Classicist style. It is an L-shaped building with two wings, a rooftop bell tower, and a clock. Its floor plan and roof structure describe its architectural form; the year of construction dates its origins. In the summer of 1862, Bedřich Smetana stayed at the castle with his wife. The two dates mark different historical connections: 1832 for its construction and 1862 for the visit.
The first written record of Niměřice dates to 1354; at that time, there was a manor there belonging to Adam of Niměřice. A fortress once stood on the site of the present-day castle. The written record and the fortress relate to different historical periods: the manor is part of the town's early written history, while the fortress belongs to the history of the site before the later castle. Local history therefore begins before the castle was built in 1832.
Chapel Opposite the Castle Gate
Opposite the castle gate stands the pseudo-Romanesque chapel “Kaple Korunování Panny Marie,” built in 1864. An original entrance dated 1812 has been preserved on the chapel. The two dates refer to different features: 1864 to the chapel and 1812 to the original entrance. Remnants of paintings survive above the entrance portal and inside. Thus, in addition to the castle architecture, the chapel's distinctive architectural form and preserved details are also part of the town's history.
Countryside and Trails
Niměřice lies on the banks of the Strenický potok. Lowland forests along its course are suitable for recreation. Cycle routes 8157 and 143 run through the area around Niměřice. Their numbers give you specific reference points when including cycle routes in your travel plans. A regularly maintained path leads from Niměřice along the trackbed of a disused railway to the edge of Dolní Cetno. For this path, the former railway line and destination provide reference points, while the cycle routes are identified by their numbers. Check local conditions before setting out.
Access to the Castle Grounds
The castle grounds open their gates only for events such as weddings, celebrations, or conferences. If the grounds are a key reason for your trip, check the visiting arrangements before you arrive.
