Libomyšl can be explored through several distinct historical and landscape features: the fortified Hrádek site, the “Chapel and Cross” complex on the village green, the Litavka River and the Hrádecká lime tree. The former watermill in the south of the village is another local landmark. When choosing a hotel in Libomyšl, these features can help guide your choice if you want to shape your stay around local history, archaeological heritage or the landscape. The sites differ both in their locations and in their historical periods.

Hrádek: fortified site and history

The oval fortified site of the Hrádek archaeological site measures approximately 35 × 22 metres. Its longer dimension exceeds the shorter one by around 13 metres; both measurements are approximate. A ditch protects the site to the south, west and east. Its shape, size and the position of the ditch offer different spatial points of reference for this archaeological feature. Hrádek is currently protected as an archaeological feature.

The fortified manor house of Hrádek u Libomyšle is associated with the village: it and the neighbouring village were probably founded in the first half of the 14th century. The foundation date is therefore estimated, not certain; the archaeological feature’s protected status is current. This distinction separates the manor’s founding history from its present-day protected status. The site’s oval shape and approximate dimensions also give a different sense of space from the elongated village green.

Chapel on the village green

The “Chapel and Cross” complex is located roughly midway along the elongated village green, in front of the municipal office. The chapel in the complex is a small rural building from the late 18th century. Its location on the green situates it within the village; its construction period places it in a much later era than the presumed founding of Hrádek. Its scale also sets the small chapel apart from the fortified manor house. Those interested in architecture can compare two different building types and periods in the village’s history.

River, lime tree and mill

The Litavka flows through Libomyšl, adding a landscape feature within the village to its buildings. The Hrádecká lime tree was first placed under protection on 26 May 1978. The date marks the tree’s initial protection. This is a different historical reference from the presumed founding of the manor house or the chapel’s construction period: here, a precise date of protection is set alongside estimated founding and construction periods.

The former watermill “Válcový mlýn Dr. Lad. Šouši”, also known as Soušův mlýn, stands in the southern part of Libomyšl and is inaccessible. It is marked on a 1727 map of Jewish settlement in Libomyšl. The map entry connects the mill to a specific historical reference concerning the history of Jewish settlement. Its location in the south distinguishes this landmark geographically from the complex on the village green; when planning a visit, it is important to note that the mill is inaccessible.
