Křenek lies on the right bank of the Elbe in the northern part of the Praha-východ District. Three themes particularly shape the area for visitors: the medieval roots of its settlement layout, the landscape of the former Elbe meanders and Křenecké jezero. The choice of location brings together the river landscape, village history and routes for outdoor activities.

Village Layout and Founding

The preserved settlement layout of Křenek has medieval origins. The original village developed around a circular village green that is still well preserved today. Křenek was founded at a ford across the Elbe, probably originally as a group of farmsteads on a spur between the river’s meanders. The village green reflects the preserved form of the settlement, while the ford and spur point to the likely location of its early settlement.

Another glimpse into the past is the history of schooling: in 1895, an independent school was established in Křenek in its own building. The former school building was restored in 1998 and converted into the municipal pub, Obecní hospoda; it was officially opened on 1 July 1999. These dates distinguish its former use as a school from its later use as a municipal pub. If you plan to visit the pub, check locally whether it is open.

Křenecké jezero and the Elbe Landscape

Křenecké jezero lies on the northern edge of Křenek, on the border with the neighboring municipality of Ovčáry. It was formed on the site of the former hill Na Homolce when a former gravel-sand pit was excavated between 1958 and 1963. The formation of the lake is therefore part of the history of a landscape that has changed over time: today’s lake took the place of the former hill.

Křenecké jezero is a natural bathing area with facilities that include a car campsite and sports facilities. If the bathing area, campsite or sports facilities are important to your plans, check locally whether they are operating. This lets you take the listed amenities into account without assuming fixed opening hours or operating conditions for your visit.

The flat landscape, with its mosaic of vegetation along former Elbe meanders, is suitable for walking and cycling. Two routes have different connections to the area: international cycle route Labská stezka No. 2 runs along the banks of the Elbe in Křenek, while cycle route 0039 passes through the village. This distinction is useful for navigation: Labská stezka follows the river, while route 0039 passes through Křenek.

Other Historical Landmarks

Some of the oldest surviving crosses in Křenek date from 1830. A later memorial site is the monument to the fallen, which dates from 1924. It was created by the sculptor Emanuel Klose from Lysá nad Labem. Together with the medieval origins of the settlement layout and the history of the former school building, these dates offer several distinct time periods through which to explore the area’s history.
