Jiřice is an interesting destination for travelers who consider local history and rural landscapes when choosing where to go. The village’s stone bell tower, memorials and historic settlement remains take center stage. Mixed forests, intensively farmed agricultural land and the Mladá protected area add to these cultural attractions. When planning a stay around your interests, the village’s history and landscape offer different points of interest.

Local history and memorial sites

The first written mention of Jiřice dates from 1479. A map from 1720 depicts the village as a small settlement surrounded by forests. These offer two different historical perspectives: the early written mention and a later cartographic depiction. The gap of more than two centuries highlights that these are snapshots from different periods.

A distinctive landmark is the stone bell tower, bearing the date 1818. It is a protected heritage building and one of the few surviving structures from the original settlement. The village square is also home to a stone cross and a boží muka, a Czech wayside shrine. These different forms of local remembrance offer a perspective on the area’s cultural history.

Jiřice was forcibly evacuated during the German occupation from 1940 to 1945, practically destroyed, and rebuilt after the war. A memorial commemorates this forced evacuation. Separate from it is the war memorial to those who fell in the First World War, which was ceremonially reopened in September 2023 after renovation. The two memorials refer to different historical contexts.

Landscape and excursions

The municipal development program for 2023–2030 describes approximately half of the municipal area as mixed forest. The other half consists of intensively farmed agricultural land interspersed with greenery. This division gives you a concrete sense of the rural surroundings: forests and agricultural land are equally part of the landscape. It complements the historic buildings with a second perspective on Jiřice.

The Mladá protected area includes parts of the cadastral areas of Jiřice and Milovice nad Labem. Protected ecosystems include grassland and shrubland, among others. This adds another natural environment to the mixed forests and agricultural land. If you plan to visit the protected area, check the local access rules beforehand.

Excursions from Jiřice are available by car, bicycle and on foot. Lysá nad Labem castle park is recommended as a cycling trip. Before setting out, check whether the route file is available and what conditions apply to the route. The different modes of transport offer varied approaches to planning an excursion, without specifying a particular tour length.
