Agarak’s natural landscape ranges from dry semi-deserts to riverside woodland, forest edges and orchards. For travelers who also consider landscapes and wildlife watching when choosing a hotel, two questions are helpful: Which habitats interest you, and what time of year would you like to observe butterflies? The Agarak area offers different perspectives: a broad landscape, the designated Trail Agarak and the tree-rich Agarak City Park.

Landscape and Protected Areas

The Agarak area extends across the eastern slopes of the southern Zangezur mountain ridge, from 585 to 1,890 meters in elevation. Its habitats include rocky, wormwood-dominated, structurally diverse and shrubby semi-deserts, as well as juniper forest, riverside scrub, deciduous forest edges and orchards. The landscape cannot be reduced to a single type: dry open areas sit alongside waterside woodland, forest edges and orchards. Nature enthusiasts visiting Agarak can therefore explore a variety of habitat types.

Around half of the Agarak Butterfly Area lies within the Zangezur Biosphere Complex. The area was designated a Prime Butterfly Area in 2014; a section was later included in the Emerald Sites Network.

Butterflies and Trail Agarak

A total of 69 butterfly species have been recorded in the Agarak area, accounting for 29 percent of all butterfly species in Armenia. Krueper’s Small White occurs in Agarak’s rocky areas and is found only in Agarak within Meghri District. This local distinction adds a specific occurrence to the overall species count. Mid-May to mid-June is considered the best time to visit Trail Agarak; around 40 to 50 butterfly species are flying then. If you are planning your trip around this, that period is a good starting point.

Trail Agarak is designated as a butterfly-watching trail and focuses on riverside butterflies in a jungle-like habitat surrounded by hot, dry semi-desert. The trail lies at an elevation of about 690 to 700 meters, is around 300 meters long and has a gradient of less than five degrees. These measurements describe the trail, while the seasonal recommendation indicates when to observe butterflies. National park staff have been trained in species identification and trail guiding. Check current access to the trail before planning a visit.

Birds Along the Trail and in the City Park

Bird species reported along Trail Agarak include Levant Sparrowhawk, Hobby, Syrian Woodpecker and Golden Oriole. Agarak City Park offers a different focus: as a tree-rich urban green space, it attracts songbirds, woodpeckers and seasonal migrants. The park can be reached from Meghri by car via the M2.

The two locations differ most in their described nature profiles: butterflies and the bird sightings listed above are the focus at the trail, while the City Park combines urban greenery with songbirds, woodpeckers and seasonal migrants.
