Geghadir lies on the western slope of the Voghjaberd Mountains at 1,880 meters above sea level. The village is also located on the Yerevan–Garni road. This is especially evident when hiking: Geghadir is a frequent starting point for a trip to Azhdahak and lies along a longer route between Garni and Voghjaberd.

Hikes Starting in and Passing Through Geghadir

The hike to Azhdahak most often starts in Geghadir. The round trip covers 18–20 kilometers and takes about 8–10 hours. Both figures help you plan your time: the distance covers the outward and return journey, while the time range gives you a sense of the tour’s duration. If you plan to include this hike in your stay, take both into account. Route information may change with road conditions, so it is advisable to check before setting out.

Another hike is a challenging, scenic 23.3-kilometer route from Garni to Voghjaberd via Hatsavan and Geghadir. When comparing it with the Azhdahak route, it is important to note how the distance is stated: the 18–20 kilometers there explicitly cover the round trip, while the 23.3 kilometers refer to the route from Garni to Voghjaberd. The figures therefore do not describe the same tour distance. When comparing hikes by length, first check whether the distance refers to a round trip or a route between two places. Routes may be revised and are subject to seasonal conditions, so it is advisable to check current information before hiking.

There are no formal trail markers for the approach to the Geghama Plateau; downloading a GPS track is essential. As trail conditions may change as paths develop, check navigation information before setting out. Separately, the upper road to the plateau is unpaved and requires a vehicle with high ground clearance. Road conditions may change seasonally, so you should check them before driving. This keeps the navigation requirements for hiking and the vehicle requirements for the upper road clearly distinct.

Local History and the Regional Setting

Local history also offers several points of reference across time. The S. Hovhannes Chapel in Geghadir was built in 2009. The village is also associated with a khachkar dating from the 12th to 13th century. The time span between these two dates highlights their different historical periods. Geghadir was formerly known as Kyarpichlu and was renamed in 1935; this name change adds another historical layer alongside the architectural and cultural references.

Beyond Geghadir, Kotayk offers a broader setting for cultural and nature-focused interests: the region combines historical monuments, scenic landscapes, hiking trails, and cultural experiences. Kotayk can be reached from Yerevan by car, taxi, minibus, and bus, as well as on organized tours.
