Art, local history, paths and thermal waters shape the way Escaldes-Engordany is seen. The themes range from miniatures and church architecture to walking trails, a long-distance hiking route and the Caldea thermal spa complex. When planning your stay, you can consider whether you are particularly interested in history, public art or thermal waters.

Local history, art and architecture

The historic town centre was once divided into the areas of Escaldes and Engordany, separated by the Pont d’Engordany. The Ruta de Engordany starts at Plaça de Santa Anna and ends at Sant Jaume Church. It passes through streets that preserve the character of the historic centre and is intended as a walking route. Its two named endpoints give the route a clear sense of direction, while the streets along the way retain the historic character of the town.

The Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre (CAEE) houses miniatures of Romanesque art as well as a collection of sculptures by Josep Viladomat. At Sant Pere Màrtir Church, the focus is instead on its design and façade: the church dates from the 20th century and was built in the Neo-Romanesque style. Its structure is typical of granite architecture, and the façade is decorated with ceramics and screen prints depicting the Beatitudes by Sergi Mas. The town thus brings together collections and a church with clearly described architectural and artistic features as distinct cultural themes.

Walking trails and hikes

The Ruta de Engordany is described as a walk through the historic town, between Plaça de Santa Anna and Sant Jaume Church. The Itinerari de l’Obaga is a different kind of route: it starts in the upper historic centre of Escaldes-Engordany, where a group of traditional bordes (farmhouses) has been preserved, and leads into the Madriu Valley. The routes are therefore distinguished by their format: the Engordany route has named starting and ending points, while the Itinerari de l’Obaga is a circular route that starts in the upper historic centre.

The Coronallacs long-distance hiking route starts at the Escaldes-Engordany Tourist Office. It passes over the Pont de la Tosca and enters the Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror via the GR 7. In 2004, this valley was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Cultural Landscape category. The route continues through several parishes; its local starting point is in Escaldes-Engordany. In this respect, Coronallacs differs from both the walk through Engordany and the circular Itinerari de l’Obaga route. Check local conditions before setting out.

Thermal waters and “El agua y la forma”

Caldea is a thermal spa complex in Escaldes-Engordany. Its listed facilities include a large indoor lagoon with hydromassage jets, outdoor and panoramic lagoons, a Nordic sauna, a hammam and Roman-Indian baths. The thermal water comes from natural springs in Escaldes-Engordany and emerges at 65 to 70 °C. Before it enters the lagoons, it is filtered and cooled to 34 to 37 °C. As facilities and admission options may change, check the operator’s information before your trip.

The artistic installation “El agua y la forma” by Javier Balmaseda also explores the theme of water. It turns the streets of Escaldes-Engordany into a path filled with history and symbolism. Fountains, pipes, washing places and wave-like forms recall the importance of thermal water in the development of the town. The route ends at Plaça del Madriu, by a fountain made from bathtubs. These features give the art trail its own focus: they refer to thermal water, while the Ruta de Engordany highlights the historic town and the Itinerari de l’Obaga draws attention to the traditional bordes in the upper town centre.
