Lezhë Between Lagoons, Dunes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Lezhë
Lezhë brings together wetlands in the lower Drin Delta, coastal landscapes and historic sites. The municipality extends from central highlands to western lowlands with fields and wetlands; some mountains are more than 1,000 metres high. The Kune–Vain–Tale area is part of a managed Category IV protected area, which also includes the wetland system of the lower Drin Delta. Its protected status is based on a government decision from 2022. You can shape your trip around nature watching, coastal activities or the region’s history.
Natural Landscapes and Birdlife
The Kune-Vain Lagoon lies near the mouth of the Drin, about eight kilometres from Lezhë. Its landscape includes lagoons, forests, marshes, islands and wild beaches. The area is therefore home to a range of habitats, not just open water. If you are interested in wetlands, you will find a dedicated nature focus here within Lezhë’s varied landscape.
The birdlife also makes the lagoon remarkable: more than 200 waterbird species occur here, including flamingos and Dalmatian pelicans. Telescopes are available at the entrance; day tours focus on nature experiences, environmental education and exploring the fauna. These activities draw attention both to the landscape and to the animals that live in it. As you plan your trip, you can compare this focus with the area’s coastal and cultural offerings.
Rana e Hedhun offers a different kind of landscape. This natural monument is characterised by sand dunes; the largest dune reaches a height of up to 80 metres along the slope. Hiking and dune climbing are among the activities offered there, and the dune landscape also provides opportunities for photography. At Rana e Hedhun, the focus is therefore on the shape and height of the dunes rather than on waterbirds and wetlands.
Coast and Activities
Shëngjin Beach offers several ways to spend a day on the coast: you can swim, take part in water sports, walk along the coast or go fishing. Tale Beach is another beach destination. It is located seven kilometres from the SH1-E762 road and has road access and visitor facilities. As these facilities may change, check what is currently available when making specific plans. The two beaches offer different options to suit your interests, without requiring you to limit your stay to just one coastal activity.
Historic Sites in Lezhë
Lezhë Castle stands on a 186-metre-high hill and is part of the ancient city of Lissus. The castle offers panoramic views over the city, the Drin Valley and the Adriatic Sea. Its architecture also reflects a long history: the castle bears Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman influences. The views of the city and its varied architectural influences make a visit a different experience from exploring lagoons and dunes.
The Skanderbeg Memorial marks the site of the Assembly of Lezhë in 1444. It stands above the ruins of St Nicholas Church, where Skanderbeg was buried. The church was converted into the Skanderbeg Burial Memorial in 1981. Another religious landmark is the 13th-century Church of St Euphemia, a pilgrimage site for believers from Lezhë and surrounding areas. Together, the castle, memorial and church offer different ways to engage with ancient history, remembrance and religious tradition.
Cuisine and Trip Planning
Traditional local cuisine includes seafood and grilled meat. These two highlights offer a simple guide if you want to include regional dishes in your trip. They add a culinary dimension to the nature and cultural experiences.
If you are looking for a hotel, first consider whether nature watching, coastal activities or historic sites will shape your trip. This helps you choose a place to stay based on the experiences that matter to you.
