Tushemisht on Lake Ohrid: Village Culture and Landscape
Accommodation in Tushemisht
Tushemisht lies on the western shore of Lake Pogradec. Centuries-old houses shape the village’s appearance; churches, local handicrafts, and walks along the lakeshore add to its character. For planning purposes, you can distinguish between different focuses: village architecture and cultural sites, as well as scenery and outdoor activities.
Village Churches and Local Handicrafts
The Church of Saint Pandelimon is a sight in Tushemisht. A bust dedicated to actress Violeta Manushi is located in the “Teto Ollga” house. Tushemisht has 15 churches in total; four of them are cultural monuments. These four are included in the total and do not form an additional group. The centuries-old houses add another feature to the townscape alongside its religious heritage.
There is a handicrafts market in the center of Tushemisht. It offers handmade clothing for children and adults, as well as crocheted toys for children, made by the village’s women residents. The selection also includes artisan-made foods: trahana, peta, various jams, pickled vegetables, vinegar, raki, and wine. If the market is important to your travel plans, check before your trip whether it is still operating; the availability of individual food items may vary.
Tushemisht is also one of the villages on Lake Ohrid where Koran fish is prepared. This is a distinct culinary highlight alongside the market’s artisan-made goods: the fish is part of the regional food culture, while the listed foods are part of the market’s offerings.
Drilon, the Lakeshore, and Trails
Drilon is near the tourist village of Tushemisht and is a karst spring consisting of three watercourses. Drilon is part of the protected national park on the Albanian side of Lake Ohrid. You can take boat trips in Drilon. The spring and the boat trips offer different ways to experience the surrounding landscape.
In Tushemisht, you can walk along the lakeshore. The Tushemisht–Peshkëpi hiking trail runs from Tushemisht to Peshkëpi and takes about two hours on foot. It offers views of Lake Ohrid, Tushemisht, and Mali i Thatë; visibility depends on the weather and the season. A lakeside stroll and the trail to Peshkëpi are different ways to get around: one follows the water in Tushemisht, while the other is an approximately two-hour walk to Peshkëpi. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change. The approximate duration can help with your scheduling; visibility remains dependent on the weather and season.
Getting to Sallkëni i Tushemishtit
You can reach the entrance to Sallkëni i Tushemishtit by bus or car. From there, only a small car or walking will take you as far as the area below the village church. Road conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
