Fier County: Antiquity, Lagoons and Coastal Landscapes
Accommodation in Fier County
Fier County combines ancient architecture with coastal landscapes, churches and regional cuisine. At Byllis, an agora with a theater and public buildings tells the story of the ancient city; in the Divjakë–Karavasta National Park area, lagoons, pine forest, beaches and wetlands shape the landscape. The contemporary cultural scene and culinary traditions also offer different ideas to help you plan your trip.
Lagoons, Coastal Forest and Beaches
Divjakë–Karavasta National Park covers more than 22,000 hectares. Its landscapes include lagoons, coastal pine forests, sandy beaches, marshes and salt flats. The protected area is internationally protected and included in the Ramsar Convention. If you prefer to explore the landscape on foot or by bike, Divjaka’s coastal pine forest offers natural trails for walks and bike rides; conditions may change.
Divjaka Beach stretches for around 15 kilometers. Fine sand and calm, clear water define its character. The beach is suitable for family holidays and ecotourism; beach services and conditions may vary by season. This gives the area a different focus from the archaeological sites: here, the emphasis is on the coast and nature.
Pelican Island itself is closed to the public. However, its breeding colony can be viewed from observation towers and on nearby boat tours. As wildlife protection regulations may change, it is a good idea to check the current rules before visiting.
Ancient Sites and Architectural History
Byllis was founded between 370 and 350 BC and was the capital of the Bylline community. The ancient city stood on a plateau 547 meters above sea level, overlooking the Vjosa River valley. Its agora included a theater, a stoa, a stadium, a gymnasium, temples and other public buildings. For orientation: Byllis Archaeological Park is on the Fier–Tepelenë national road, 1.5 kilometers from the village of Hekal.
The Bylis Theater in Fier is a different kind of cultural venue from the ancient theater at Byllis: it was founded in 1971 and hosts performances, premieres and festivals. Since the program changes, you can check current event dates when planning your visit. The Ardenica Monastery offers another glimpse into architectural history. The 13th-century Orthodox monastery was founded in 1282 and is located about 18 kilometers south of Fier. Inside are sacred frescoes by the Zografi brothers; the surrounding area offers panoramic views of Lake Karavasta and the fields of Mallakastra.
The seven churches of Karavasta also have a distinctive art-historical focus: visitors can explore their interiors and see preserved icons and carved walls. Access and opening arrangements may change, so it is worth checking before your visit. There are 15 churches in Libofshë, four of which are state-protected cultural monuments. Cfiri Castle in Mallakastër, in Fier District, is a medieval stone fortification and is classified as a Category I cultural monument.
Riverside Landscapes and Regional Cuisine
The Seman is formed near Kuçovë at the confluence of the Devoll and Osum rivers and flows into the Adriatic after about 85 kilometers. Libofshë lies on the Seman; the surrounding area has around eight kilometers of Adriatic coastline, including Ndërnenas Beach for seaside activities. Beach conditions and services may vary by season.
A typical Fier dish is Roshnica: small pieces of lamb served with fresh salad and local herbs. Mish i Pjekur në Guralecë is meat slow-cooked on hot stones to preserve its natural aroma and flavor. Fresh fish and seafood are also important along the coast near Fier. Karavasta Lagoon is associated with traditional fishing; local restaurants serve seasonal dishes featuring eel, sea bass and blue shrimp.
You can prioritize your interests in different ways: ancient buildings and churches offer cultural history, while the national park, beaches and river landscapes bring together nature and coastal themes. When visiting beaches, trails or churches, it is a good idea to keep seasonal conditions and current access rules in mind.
