When planning a trip to Pulaj, the coast, river landscape and birdlife offer different points of interest. In the village’s coastal area, sandy banks along the Buna River shape the landscape. The Velipoja or Pulaj beach and the Viluni Lagoon are also nearby. The Buna–Velipojë protected landscape is another natural attraction, important as a wintering and breeding area for waterbirds.

Coast, River and Lagoon

Velipoja or Pulaj beach lies between Velipoja Forest and the Viluni Lagoon. Nearby Velipoja beach is about 14 kilometres long and has fine, dark sand. The Viluni Lagoon is a saltwater area about two kilometres east of Velipoja beach; a natural channel connects it to the sea. The beach and lagoon also differ in their features: the beach is a long stretch of coast with fine, dark sand, while the lagoon is a saltwater area with a natural connection to the sea. This makes it easy to distinguish between the two landscape features when planning your trip.

Birdlife and Protected Landscape

The Viluni Lagoon is especially notable for its birdlife. The Buna–Velipojë landscape is designated a protected landscape in IUCN Category V and is an important wintering and breeding area for waterbirds; around 138 bird species have been recorded there. Dense forests also characterise the Pulaj Velipojë area. A heron colony is located at the mouth of the Buna River, in the wider region around Pulaj. It adds a site within the broader regional context to the coastal and lagoon attractions.

Getting Your Bearings in the Area

The Buna Delta and Viluni Lagoon are each three kilometres from Pulaj Guesthouse. Both natural attractions are therefore equally distant from the same reference point, but represent different landscapes. Walking trails run around Pulaj Guesthouse, and cycling is possible from there along the Buna. The Velipojë Nature Reserve is also near the guesthouse. These location references help you distinguish the river delta, lagoon and nature reserve when planning your trip.

Activities and When to Visit

Light water sports are offered at Velipoja or Pulaj beach in summer; seasonal offerings may vary. Trekking and hiking are among the possible tourist activities in the coastal area of Pulaj village. The nearby Buna Delta and Viluni Lagoon offer opportunities for ecotourism and adventure tourism. If water sports are important to your trip, check in advance whether they are available during your travel dates.

Different nature-related interests come into focus at different times of year: water sports at the beach are associated with summer, while the Buna–Velipojë landscape is important as a wintering and breeding area for waterbirds. This distinction can help you choose the focus of your stay, without treating beach activities and birdlife as the same travel experience.
