Skaverup combines a coastal landscape on Avnø Fjord with opportunities to observe nature and a historic connection to Næs. When choosing where to stay, it is worth considering the different sides of the area: the landscape, outdoor activities and the fjord’s past uses each offer their own point of interest.

Coast and Landscape

Skaverup Strand lies on Avnø Fjord, off Skaverup. This sandy and stony beach is well suited to coastal fishing, bringing together a specific type of beach and an activity by the water. North of the former Skaverup Nor lies a raised moraine plain, reaching up to 16 metres above the former inlet. The landscape around Skaverup remains intact. The area between Næs-Skaverup and Avnø is relatively steep; coastal cliffs can be found along the coast north of Næs and at Skaverup Strand.

The coastal stretch that includes Næs-Skaverup Strand contains nature protected under Section 3, including meadows, bogs, dry grasslands, coastal meadows and lakes. This means the landscape extends beyond the beach itself. If the protected status is important to your plans, check the latest information.

Nature Watching and Outdoor Activities

There is abundant bird and wildlife in the fjord and on land at Næs and Skaverup Strand. Benches along the fjord embankment offer places to watch herons. They provide a specific vantage point for observing the shoreline, while wildlife can also be seen both on the water and on land. In the Næs-Skaverup area, you can also watch sunsets over Knudshoved.

The coast near Skaverup and some of the surrounding woods offer opportunities for walking and cycling. This lets you focus on either the coastal landscape or the woods, rather than limiting your stay to the beach.

History and Activities on the Water

At Næs, at the end of Avnø Fjord, there was a small settlement during the later Iron Age and the Viking Age where Viking ships could dock. This former landing place connects the settlement with the fjord’s waterscape and adds a historical perspective to nature watching and outdoor activities. For travellers interested in history, Næs offers a distinct point of interest.

Windsurfing is possible on Avnø Fjord, depending on the weather. The “Dybsø til Næs Strand” boat route is 19 km long and is not signposted. Check local conditions before paddling. Planning considerations therefore differ: weather is a key factor for windsurfing, while the route’s length and lack of signage are important for the boat trip.

Outdoor opportunities differ in how specific their points of reference are: benches along the embankment are available for watching herons, Skaverup Strand for coastal fishing, while walking and cycling are possible along the coast and in some woods. This lets you weigh up whether to focus on nature watching, an activity on the water or getting around on land.
