Tistrup brings together art and church history with trails, meeting places and local features.

Art and culture at JANUS

Janus Bygningen in Tistrup is an independent art gallery and art museum. Exhibitions at JANUS change; selected works from an extensive collection are shown, including works by established artists as well as new talent. The programme thus brings together different artistic positions rather than focusing on a single perspective.

JANUS offers guided tours lasting about an hour and costing DKK 1,500 during the museum’s regular opening hours. If you would like to include a guided tour in your plans, check the booking information in advance. JANUS Café serves coffee, tea, cake and soft drinks. The art shop sells ceramics, textiles, art books and postcards.

Tistrup Church and its building history

Several historical features can be distinguished at Tistrup Church. Its original Romanesque ashlar masonry probably dates from the 12th century. Ashlar masonry refers to walls made of regularly dressed and laid stones. The late medieval tower and late medieval porch were added in a later building phase. The vaults were painted by the Liljemesteren in 1500–20.

For your travel plans, the church provides a specific point of cultural and historical interest: the masonry, tower, porch and vault paintings represent different periods in its history. The cautious dating of the original masonry is important; it is thought to date from the 12th century.

Trails, picnics and outdoor activities

Tistrup Anlæg has a lake and small paths around the grounds. The picnic shelter accommodates twelve people, and a grill is available free of charge. At Tistrup Legeplads, there are several tables and benches where you can eat food you have brought with you. Events including Skt. Hans are celebrated at Anlæg.

Different trail lengths can also help you plan walks and hikes. The Hodde/Tistrup Vandrestier trail system consists of four hikes, which you can walk individually or combine into a route of about 15 kilometres. Idrætsstien starts on Kasthøjvej in Tistrup and is about 4.5 kilometres long in total. Comparing the trail lengths can help you choose between a single trail and the longer combined route. Check local trail information before setting out, as maintenance changes may affect the details.

At Letbæk, the trails in the adjoining woodland connect westwards to the Assenbæk trail network. Separately, the trail network in nearby Kraruplund Skov invites you to go for a walk. These offer different starting points for your plans without combining them into a single route.

Local features and practical information

The dairy in Tistrup makes cheese for Arla using a special Tistrup culture developed in 1940. This is a local connection to food production; it does not involve a visitor offering.

The municipality describes Tistrup Mini-Tri as an annual sporting competition. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the dates in advance. Tistrup railway station is on the Esbjerg–Struer railway line; check the timetable to plan your specific journey.

The campsite at Tistrup og Omegns Spejdercenter has two shelters and a fire pit. The toilet and water facilities can be used by prior arrangement at the scout hut 300 metres away. This condition is important when planning: arrange access to these facilities with the campsite provider in advance.
