Kelstrup can be explored through its nearby beach, archaeological points of interest and regional trails. If you are looking for a hotel in Kelstrup, you can first consider whether the coast or activities in the wider area will shape your stay. The beach and trails cover different geographical areas.

Beach and coast near Kelstrup

Nearby Kelstrup Beach is in the Kelstrup holiday home area. The south-facing bathing beach is 450 metres long and 10 to 15 metres wide. Several bathing jetties are among its features, as are stone groynes that protect the beach. The beach is sandy; the inner part of the beach profile has a stony seabed.

The conditions in the water are also described: it gradually gets deeper, and there are small waves but no surf. These features complement the information about length, orientation and beach profile, and help you consider the coast as a distinct focus of the destination. A car park is about 116 metres from the water.

Public fishing is permitted at Kelstrup Beach with a valid Danish national fishing licence. Check the applicable regulations before fishing. The seabed is predominantly sandy, with areas of stones and seaweed in places. The beach therefore offers both swimming and fishing, although fishing requires a licence and compliance with current regulations.

Hiking and cycling in the area

The 106-kilometre Camino Haderslev Næs passes through Hejsager and Kelstrup. One specific hike in the wider area is Stage 7, which runs from Halk Church to Vilstrup Church and is 15 kilometres long. You can walk the route in either direction. A two-kilometre section of the stage runs along the popular beaches of Hejsager Beach and Kelstrup Beach.

This means that a hiking stage encompasses two different distances: the full 15-kilometre route and the two-kilometre beach section within it. This puts the coastal section in context without confusing it with the length of the entire stage. The two churches are also useful for planning, as they indicate the direction in which the stage is described.

For mountain bikers, the region offers the 56.5-kilometre Hejsager – Sønderballe – Haderslev – Starup – Hejsager loop, which starts in Hejsager. It is considered less suitable for beginners and is more geared towards experienced mountain bikers. The 15-kilometre hiking stage and the 56.5-kilometre loop provide a concrete comparison of route lengths; the assessment of the experience level applies to the mountain bike route.

Burial mounds and local community

Kelstrup Beach is designated as a group of burial mounds in the area around Kelstrup. The prehistoric round barrow No. 391015 is located in a holiday home area at Kelstrup Beach; the round barrow is considered well preserved and worthy of protection. This combines coastal features with an archaeological point of interest in this part of the beach.

Næs Hallen in Kelstrup is also part of local community life: sports clubs, cultural associations and social events take place there. The hall also lists badminton, floorball and handball clubs.

Nearby Kelstrup Forest Burial Ground is about 500 metres from the beach. A well-maintained woodland path leads to the site. Open guided tours are offered there on an ongoing basis; visits are subject to the operator’s regulations.
