Discover Årøsund on the Little Belt
Accommodation in Årøsund
Årøsund on the Little Belt brings together several themes that can give your trip different focuses: today’s ferry service to Aarø, the history of the harbour and the Kystbatteriet, and the view from the pier. From Årøsund, you can also hike the Camino Haderslev Næs. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to first consider whether you would like to focus your stay on the ferry connection, maritime cultural heritage, or hiking and coastal themes.
Ferry and transport history
The Aarø ferry operates between Aarø and Årøsund and has space for 12 cars and 98 passengers. If you are planning the crossing, check the sailing times in advance. Today’s service is also part of the Årø–Årøsund cultural environment, which includes the industrial harbour of Årøsund.
In the past, Årøsund was connected to Assens by ferry; this service was part of the postal route between Copenhagen and Hamburg. By contrast, the Aarø ferry now runs between Aarø and Årøsund. These are two different parts of transport history: the former connection to Assens as part of a long-distance postal route, and the current ferry route to Aarø.
Culture, history and crafts
The preserved remains of Kystbatteriet Aarøsund are in relatively good condition. The command bunker, accommodation rooms and all four gun platforms are intact. The other building and craft themes span different periods: Årøsund Lighthouse is one of the buildings from the early 20th century in the Årø–Årøsund cultural environment; the former carriage house in Årøsund is now used for boatbuilding. The old boatyard keeps traditional boatbuilding crafts alive, and Aarøsund Galleri hosts exhibitions by local artists and craftspeople.
Different conditions apply to visits to the cultural attractions: a visit to the old boatyard depends on the workshop being open, while exhibitions at Aarøsund Galleri change. If you are interested in a particular exhibition, check the current programme in advance.
Coastal views and trails
The pier in Årøsund offers views across the Little Belt. The pier promenade at Aarøsund Lystbådehavn is 300 metres long and was designed to allow people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users to walk along the pier. If you plan to use the route with a mobility impairment or in a wheelchair, check the current access conditions before your visit. From Årøsund, you can also hike the Camino Haderslev Næs.
The pier promenade and the Camino offer different experiences: at the pier, the 300-metre route combines with views across the Belt; the Camino is an option for a hike starting in Årøsund. This lets you choose between a walk along the pier and a hike on the Camino.
