Fredericia combines urban history with a historic fortress and a range of cultural and landscape attractions. These include a permanent exhibition, paths along moats and bastions, a viewpoint, an art walk and a wide sandy beach. The attractions offer different ways to enjoy a stay in the city.

City history and the fortress

The Fredericia Bymuseum has a permanent exhibition on Fredericia’s history from 1650 to the present day. The main exhibition covers the city’s history as a religious free town, as well as trade, crafts and industry. Its historical scope therefore stretches from 1650 to today, while also exploring several aspects of urban life.

Fredericia Vold is one of Northern Europe’s oldest and best-preserved fortifications. Its 18-kilometre network of paths runs alongside moats and bastions. The Vold is also a green space in the heart of the city, with wild-growing trees and shrubs, grassy areas and old moats. Here, you can experience the fortifications and their green surroundings as different facets of the same place.

Views, architecture and the beach

Det Hvide Vandtårn is a viewpoint offering views over Fredericia and the Little Belt. The tower also houses an exhibition by Museum Fredericia about several of the city’s older and well-known buildings. The viewpoint and exhibition offer different perspectives: one looks out over the city and the Little Belt, while the other focuses on selected buildings in Fredericia.

Østerstrand is a wide sandy beach with opportunities to swim both from the water’s edge and from a large circular bridge. A WaterWheel beach wheelchair is available to borrow at the beach; you can get the key from the beach café. As local arrangements may change, check the loan and key collection arrangements before your visit if you plan to use this option.

Art and outdoor routes

Kanalbyen has an art walk where you can see several works of art. An illuminated main path runs through Søndervold Nature Park and is open to walkers and cyclists. This gives you a choice between a route featuring artworks and a path for walking and cycling as different ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Madsby Legepark also offers a specific leisure activity: an 18-hole miniature golf course. Bridgewalking is a special activity available at only four places worldwide. These two attractions offer a different experience from the green paths or the art walk.

Which routes suit your interests?

The difference between the routes is clear: Fredericia Vold has an 18-kilometre network of paths along moats and bastions. A lit main path runs through Søndervold Nature Park and is open to walkers and cyclists. You can weigh up whether you would prefer to explore the fortifications, moats and bastions, or use an illuminated path that is explicitly open to both walkers and cyclists.
