Skanderborg offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: Skanderborg Sø and Svanesø, trails through Dyrehaven, activities around the Trailcenter, and cultural history in its churches and museum. The specific routes, facilities and events can help you decide which themes matter most for your stay.

Trails by the lake and in Dyrehaven

The Dyrehaveruten is a yellow-marked, 3.1-kilometre circular trail through areas of old beech forest. It runs along Skanderborg Sø, past reeds and a swamp forest on the old lakebed. The route therefore offers impressions of lakeside scenery, wetlands and beech forest. There are also marked walking trails around Svanesø, about three kilometres long. A bird tower near Svanesø offers views across the entire lake and its diverse birdlife.

Another marked route runs through Dyrehaven: Skovturen is mostly on flat terrain and gravel paths. These paths are suitable for strollers, wheelchairs and people with reduced mobility. The route also passes the disc golf course in Dyrehaven. If you are travelling with a stroller or wheelchair, the terrain and surface provide practical guidance for planning your trip.

Cycling, walking and water

The Trailcenter Skanderborg has an MTB start ramp integrated into the roof, as well as a skills course for mountain biking and gravel riding. Walking on forest trails is also supported there. A cycling tour around Skanderborg Sø, with numerous experiences along the way, is also available. Information about these cycling options focuses on different things: the Trailcenter features facilities for MTB and gravel riding, while the tour centres on the lake and experiences around it.

Bybadet is a multifunctional area open to everyone all year round. It has facilities for canoeing, kayaking and SUP. For a trip on the water, the M/S Dagmar offers leisurely boat tours and special events from May to the end of September. The trip lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes and departs from Bybadet, Parkvej 10, 8660 Skanderborg. During the trips, information about the area’s history is provided over loudspeakers. Operating times may vary; check the current timetable for your preferred date.

Churches and history

Skanderborg Slotskirke is the last surviving remnant of the east wing that Frederik II had added to Skanderborg Castle between 1562 and 1571. The old castle cellar beneath Slotskirke has been converted into a crypt. Skanderup Kirke offers another architectural point of interest: built around 1150 from travertine, it is in the Romanesque style.

Skanderborg Bunkerne is a department of Museum Skanderborg and presents traces of the German Luftwaffe’s Danish headquarters. Kulturhuset in Skanderborg houses a cinema, a library and a café; a lakeside bath is planned there. The town thus has both historic sites and cultural facilities with a range of different focuses.

Events throughout the year

The Smukfest music festival takes place every year in August in Dyrehaven in Skanderborg. In May, Skanderborg holds an annual children’s book fair in honour of children’s author Ole Lund Kirkegaard. Both events complement the year-round routes and cultural sites with recurring happenings. The exact dates change from year to year. If an event is important to your trip, check the dates for the relevant year.
