In Horsens, several paths lead into the city’s history: through former prison spaces, to archaeological finds and traces of the medieval city layout. There is also contemporary art, trails along Horsens Fjord and nature experiences on Endelave. When planning your trip, you can combine these different interests or focus on them individually.

Museums with Distinct Perspectives

The Féngselsmuseet is located in the former prison buildings in Horsens, which were used as a prison from 1853 to 2006. Exhibition topics include drugs, the biker gang and the last execution by axe in Denmark. The museum also has an 18-metre-long escape tunnel. Guided tours, children’s activities and talks round out the programme; dates may vary.

The Industrimuseet focuses on historic engines and machines. Some can be set in motion during your visit; individual demonstrations may follow a schedule. There is also a playground themed around industrial history, featuring a seven-metre-high slide attached to a gas tank.

The Horsens Museum traces the city’s development from prehistoric times to the present. Its collection includes thousands of archaeological finds that illustrate social development and ways of life over 10,000 years. The Horsens Art Museum offers a different perspective: it collects experimental contemporary art, with a focus on Danish art. Since 1984, it has been located in Caroline Amalielund and has displayed art both indoors and outdoors. The museums therefore differ not only in their subject matter, but also in their perspectives on the past and present.

City History in Public Spaces

Street names also preserve clues to Horsens’ medieval layout. Graven follows the former western rampart and moat, while Kattesund recalls a former northern palisade. SkulpturallĂ©en offers a walk among more than 30 sculptures in public spaces. Vor Frelsers Kirke is part of one of the oldest surviving cultural environments in the merchant town of Horsens. A well-known life story is also connected with the city: Vitus Bering was born and grew up in Horsens.

Routes Around the Fjord and River

A continuous, signposted hiking route of about 60 kilometres runs around Horsens Fjord; a corresponding cycle route also crosses several municipal boundaries. Both give access to nature close to the fjord. Check local route conditions when making specific plans. The GudenĂ„stien covers a different scale: this 175-kilometre trail follows Denmark’s longest river from its source on the Jutland Ridge, through SĂžhĂžjlandet and to the edge of Randers Fjord. It is divided into 18 stages, each six to 14 kilometres long. One stage passes through Horsens Municipality, from the source in the direction of Ry.

The 61-kilometre Naturstien Horsens–Silkeborg is paved and almost entirely free of motor traffic; it is designated for cyclists, hikers and horse riders. These routes therefore offer different lengths and ways of getting around, without needing to form part of a single itinerary.

Den Genfundne Bro is a distinct cultural-history destination: a restored railway bridge and an example of industrial engineering. It was uncovered and restored in 2014. There is a large car park on site, as well as tables and benches for picnics. Wheelchair users can reach the bridge from the car park via a level asphalt path.

Endelave and Island Nature

Endelave lies in the Kattegat, off Horsens Fjord. The ferry operated by Horsens Municipality connects the island with the port of Snaptun daily; the crossing takes about an hour. Check departure details before your trip. On Endelave, hiking and cycling through varied, unspoilt nature are among the activities available in every season. The island is also known for its many wild rabbits. A rabbit safari offers a good chance to see them. This island experience differs from Horsens’ museums and city-history attractions, offering another way to shape your stay.
